2002 Democratic Party (HK) Leadership Election
The Democratic Party leadership election was held on 1 December 2002 for the 30-member 5th Central Committee of the Democratic Party in Hong Kong, including chairman and two vice-chairman posts. Incumbent vice-chairman was elected as chairman uncontestedly, succeeding founding chairman Martin Lee Chu-ming. Eligibility The Central Committee was elected by the party congress. All public office holders, including the members of the Legislative Council and District Councils, are eligible to vote in the party congress. Every 30 members can also elect a delegate who holds one vote in the congress. Overview Founding chairman Martin Lee stepped down according to the four-term limit. There was only Yeung Sum's team contested for the posts. Yeung Sum received 121 votes for and 9 votes against, 2 more votes against him than Martin Lee in 2000. Yeung Sum In 2015
Yang (; ) is the transcription of a Chinese family name. It is the sixth most common surname in Mainland China. It is the 16th surname on the '' Hundred Family Surnames'' text. The Yang clan was founded by Boqiao, son of Duke Wu of Jin in the Spring and Autumn Period of the Ji (姬) surname, the surname of the royal family during the Zhou dynasty ) who was enfeoffed in the state of Yang. Chan King-ming
Chan King-ming is a Hong Kong politician and academic. He served as the vice-chairman of the Democratic Party of Hong Kong from 2004 to 2006. He is also an associate professor in the department of biochemistry and Environmental Science Program of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Academic career Chan King-ming earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Philosophy degrees at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and his doctoral degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. Wu Chi-wai
Wu Chi-wai, MH (, born 18 October 1962) is a Hong Kong politician. He is the former chairman of the Democratic Party from 2016 to 2020 and a former member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong for Kowloon East constituency since 2012. He has also been a member of Wong Tai Sin District Council since 1999 and member of the Urban Council from 1995 to 1999. Zachary Wong Wai-yin
Zachary Wong Wai-yin (; born 22 December 1957, Hong Kong) is a former Yuen Long District Councillor (representing Nam Ping) for the Meeting Point and later Democratic Party and a former member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong. He joined the Association for the Rights of the Elderly, founded by Yeung Sum and Frederick Fung, in 1982. He was elected chairman of the association in 1991. In 1988, he joined Meeting Point and became a member of its Central Committee in 1991. He was also part of the Joint Committee on the Promotion of Democratic Government. He organised most of the rallies, petitions and 50-hour fasting strike at the Star Ferry Pier in 1989 for a faster pace of democracy. Wong Sing-chi
Nelson Wong Sing-chi (born 11 October 1957) is a Hong Kong politician and social worker. He had been member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong between 2000–04 and 2008–12. He was the founding member of the Democratic Party before he was expelled in 2015 for his support in the government's constitutional reform proposals. He was also briefly a founding member of the Third Side, a centrist political party. He is also former member of the North District Council and Regional Council. James To Kun-sun
James To Kun-sun (; ; born 11 March 1963) is a Hong Kong lawyer and Democratic Party (Hong Kong), Democratic Party politician. From 1991 to 2020, To was a member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong, representing the District Council (Second) constituency. In his final four years, To was the most senior member in the Legislative Council, and was also the convenor of the pro-democracy camp (Hong Kong), pro-democracy caucus from 2016 to 2017. Sin Chung-kai
Sin Chung-kai (; born 15 June 1960) is a former member of the Hong Kong Legislative Council. He was the chairman and a member of Kwai Tsing District Council for the Wah Lai constituency. He was one of the two vice-chairmen of the Democratic Party until December 2012, and now serves as a member of the Executive Committee. Szeto Wah
Szeto Wah (; 28 February 1931 – 2 January 2011) was a prominent Hong Kong democracy activist and politician. He was the founding chairman of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, the Hong Kong Professional Teachers' Union and former member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong from 1985 to 1997 and from 1997 to 2004. Being one of the two icons of the Hong Kong democracy movement alongside Martin Lee, Szeto played an instrumental role in the emergence of the pro-democracy camp. Dr Law Chi-kwong, GBS, JP (; born 1 November 1953) is a Hong Kong politician who served as Secretary for Labour and Welfare between 2017 and 2022. He is an associate professor in social work at the University of Hong Kong.
