2002 Atlantic Sun Men's Basketball Tournament
The 2002 Atlantic Sun men's basketball tournament was held February 28–March 2 at the Curb Event Center at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. This was the first Atlantic Sun tournament after the conference changed its name from the Trans America Athletic Conference. 2001–02 Florida Atlantic Owls men's basketball team, Florida Atlantic defeated defending champions in the championship game, 76–75, to win their first Atlantic Sun men's basketball tournament. The Owls, therefore, received the Atlantic Sun's automatic bid to the 2002 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament, 2002 NCAA tournament, their first appearance in the Division I tournament. Curb Event Center
The Curb Event Center is a multipurpose arena on the campus of Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. Named in honor of its prime donor, music executive and former lieutenant governor of California Mike Curb, the arena was completed in 2003, replacing the former Striplin Gym. It is the home venue of Belmont's men's and women's basketball and volleyball teams and hosted the 2004 and 2005 Atlantic Sun Conference men's basketball tournaments. In June 2004 in sports, 2004 it hosted some of the junior and preliminary events of the United States, U.S.Gymnastics Championships. 2001–02 Florida Atlantic Owls Men's Basketball Team
The 2001–02 Florida Atlantic Owls men's basketball team represented Florida Atlantic University during the 2001–02 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Owls were led by head coach Sidney Green and played their home games at Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena in Boca Raton, Florida as members of the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Owls finished the season 19–12, 13–7 in ASUN play to finish third in the regular season standings. They defeated Jacksonville, Jacksonville State, and Georgia State to win the ASUN tournament championship. As a result, they received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament the first appearance in school history as the No. 15 seed in the South region. Sidney Green (basketball)
Sidney Green (born January 4, 1961) is an American former professional basketball player and former coach. He played college basketball for the UNLV Runnin' Rebels and was drafted into the National Basketball Association (NBA) by the Chicago Bulls in 1983. After a ten-year career in the NBA he went into college coaching. He now works as a Chicago Bulls team ambassador. Life Green was born in Brooklyn, New York. A 6'9" forward/center, Green attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he played for the UNLV Runnin' Rebels basketball team. Green's final game for UNLV was the team's second round loss to eventual champion North Carolina State in 1983. He was an All-American selection, and was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the first round of the 1983 NBA Draft. Thomas Terrell (basketball)
Thomas Terrell Jr. (born September 5, 1979) is an American retired professional basketball player. Early life Terrell grew up in Bogue Chitto, Mississippi, the son of Thomas Terrell Sr. and Barbara Hurst. He began playing basketball at the age of two. Terrell's father, a logger and mechanic, was killed in an accident in June 1993, with his body lodged under a car. Terrell attended Brookhaven High School and was cut by the basketball team as a sophomore. As a junior, he had grown to 6'5 and he rejoined the varsity squad. Terrell averaged 18 points and 11 rebounds per game as a senior, but a poor score on the ACT disqualified him from most colleges. College career Terrell played two seasons at Copiah–Lincoln Community College before transferring to Georgia State to play under Lefty Driesell. The 2001 Trans America Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament (now known as the ASUN men's basketball tournament) was held February 28 – March 3 at the GSU Sports Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. This was the final tournament before the TAAC changed its name to its current moniker, the Atlantic Sun. Top-seeded defeated in the championship game, 79–55, to win their second TAAC/Atlantic Sun men's basketball tournament. The Panthers, therefore, received the TAAC's automatic bid to the 2001 NCAA tournament. Format With no teams joining or leaving the conference, the field remained set at ten. Belmont University
Belmont University is a private Christian university in Nashville, Tennessee. Descended from Belmont Women's College, founded in 1890 by schoolteachers Ida Hood and Susan Heron, the institution was incorporated in 1951 as Belmont College. It became Belmont University in 1991. 2002 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament
The 2002 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament involved 65 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 12, 2002, and ended with the championship game on April 1 in Atlanta at the Georgia Dome. A total of 64 games were played. The Belmont Bruins men's basketball team represents Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee.
