2001 Singaporean General Election
General elections were held in Singapore on 3 November 2001. President S.R. Nathan dissolved parliament on 18 October 2001 on the advice of Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong. The ruling People's Action Party (PAP) won 82 of the 84 elected seats in Parliament. Due to the large number (51) of uncontested seats, only 675,306 of the 2,036,923 eligible voters (33.2%) had an opportunity to vote. As of the recent election in 2020, this was the most recent, and fourth overall (third consecutive) election PAP returned to power on nomination day with a majority of uncontested walkovers. This election marked the first time that total eligible voter population exceeded the 2 million mark. A Non-constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) is a member of an opposition list of political parties in Singapore, political party in Singapore who, according to the Constitution of Singapore, Constitution and Parliamentary Elections Act, is declared to have been elected a Parliament of Singapore, Member of Parliament (MP) without constituency representation, despite having lost in a parliamentary elections in Singapore, general election, by virtue of having been one of the best-performing losers. The Singapore Democratic Alliance (abbreviation: SDA) is a political coalition between the National Solidarity Party (NSP) and Singapore Justice Party (SJP) in Singapore. Chee Soon Juan
Chee Soon Juan is a Singaporean politician, activist and former lecturer who has been serving as Secretary-General of the Singapore Democratic Party since 1993. Prior to entering politics in 1992, upon Chiam See Tong's invitation to join the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), Chee was a lecturer at the National University of Singapore. Chee subsequently succeeded Chiam as the party's secretary-general after Chiam, whom Chee and the rest of the party's leadership have had a number of disagreements, left the party. Singapore Democratic Party
The Singapore Democratic Party (abbreviation: SDP) is a politcal party in Singapore. The party was founded on 6 August 1980 by Chiam See Tong. During the 1991 general election, Ling How Doong and Cheo Chai Chen won Bukit Gombak SMC and Nee Soon SMC respectively, giving the party a total of three seats in Parliament. When Chiam fell out with the party's Central Executive Committee in 1993 and subsequently left the party in 1996 for the splinter Singapore People's Party (SPP), the party became destabilised. Chiam was succeeded by Chee Soon Juan, who has remained as Secretary-General ever since. A centrist to centre-left political party, the SDP ideologically draw upon both liberalism and social democracy. Singapore General Election, 2011
General elections were held in Singapore on 7 May 2011. President S. R. Nathan dissolved parliament on 19 April 2011 on the advice of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Voting is mandatory in Singapore and is based on the first-past-the-post system. Elections are conducted by the Elections Department, which is under the jurisdiction of the Prime Minister's Office. Nomination day was held on 27 April 2011, and for the second election in a row, the PAP did not return to government on nomination day, but it did return to government on polling day. This election also marked the first and the only three-cornered fight since 2001 in Punggol East SMC before it increased to four-cornered fight on a by-election held two years later. 1992 Marine Parade By-election
A by-election for the Marine Parade Group Representation Constituency in Singapore was held on 19 December 1992. The People's Action Party (PAP) defeated the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), the Singapore Justice Party (SJP) and the National Solidarity Party (NSP) with 72.9% of the valid votes. The team of candidates from the People's Action Party (PAP) were subsequently declared as the MPs for Marine Parade GRC. This by-election also marked the first (and the sole instance as of 2022) time in the history of Singapore, where an incumbent Prime Minister vacated his seat to face a by-election.(Lee Kuan Yew also vacated his seat in Tanjong Pagar to face a by-election 35 years back, though he was Leader of the Opposition at the time). Choo Wee Khiang ( zh, s=朱为强, p=Zhū Wéiqiáng) is a Singaporean former politician. A former member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), he was the Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Whampoa division of Jalan Besar GRC between 1997 and 1999. Choo resigned from both the party and Parliament before being convicted for corruption. Choo had previously represented the Kallang division of Jalan Besar GRC between 1991 and 1997 and the Joo Chiat division of Marine Parade GRC between 1981 and 1991. Jalan Besar Group Representation Constituency is a four-member Group Representation Constituency composed of several city suburbs surrounding the Central Area of Singapore. There are four wards in the GRC: Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng, Kolam Ayer, Whampoa and lastly Kampong Glam. The current Members of Parliament are Josephine Teo, Heng Chee How, Denise Phua and Wan Rizal Wan Zakariah from the People's Action Party (PAP). The Aljunied Group Representation Constituency is a five-member group representation constituency (GRC) in the north-eastern and eastern region of Singapore. The GRC consists of five divisions: Eunos, Bedok Reservoir-Punggol, Kaki Bukit, Serangoon and Paya Lebar. Background The party has been based mostly in Marine Parade district of Singapore since the party has taken part in general elections after 1988 by fielding its candidates at Marine Parade Group Representation Constituency (GRC). In 1997, it did not take part in the General Election.
