2001 Categoría Primera B Season
The 2001 Categoría Primera B season, (officially known as the 2001 Copa Águila for sponsorship reasons) was the 12th season of Colombia's second division football league. Deportes Quindío won the tournament for the first time and was promoted to the Categoría Primera A. After expanding the number of Primera A teams from 16 to 18, DIMAYOR organised a special promotion tournament, where the top two teams were promoted. The two DIMAYOR affiliates that were taking part in Primera B and failed to earn promotion ( Cúcuta Deportivo and Unión Magdalena) were invited to compete, as well as Atlético Bucaramanga as the team that was relegated from Primera A at the end of the season, with Unión Magdalena and Atlético Bucaramanga being promoted. Edinson Castro, playing for Deportivo Rionegro, was the topscorer with 15 goals. Teams 16 teams take part in the season. Categoría Primera B
Categoría Primera B, commonly referred to as Torneo BetPlay Dimayor due to sponsorship by online betting company BetPlay (formerly ''Torneo Águila''), is the second-division football league in Colombia. Format DIMAYOR has applied a new format from 2015 onwards because of the expansion to 20 teams in the Primera A tournament. The league will no longer have Apertura and Finalización seasons but rather a yearlong tournament with home and away games. The first phase of the tournament is everyone against everyone home and away games. The second is a two-groups phase with the 8 top teams from the season who play each other to determine the winners of each group. The winners of the two groups are both promoted to the Primera A and play the final in home and away games to determine the champion of the season. Estadio Daniel Villa Zapata is a multi-use stadium in Barrancabermeja, Colombia. It is currently used mostly for football matches. The stadium was originally built in 1970 with a capacity of 6,000 people. Alianza Petrolera play their home matches at this stadium. Built on land donated by Ecopetrol, the stadium was named after Daniel Villa Zapata, a dentist who settled in the town in the 40s and went on to become an important local leader due to his enthusiasm for sports, especially association football. Alianza Petrolera is a Colombian professional football team based in Barrancabermeja, that currently plays in the Categoría Primera A. The club was founded in 1991 and played in the Categoría Primera B until 2012. They play their home games at the Daniel Villa Zapata stadium. They have also played home matches in the town of Guarne, Antioquia and in Floridablanca.
