2001 Big 12 Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The 2001 Big 12 men's basketball tournament was the postseason men's basketball tournament for the Big 12 Conference. It was played from March 8 to 11 in Kansas City, Missouri at Kemper Arena. Oklahoma won the tournament for the 1st time and received the conference's automatic bid to the 2001 NCAA tournament. The Hy-Vee Arena, previously known as Kemper Arena, is an indoor arena located in Kansas City, Missouri. Prior to conversion to a youth sports and community gymnasium facility, Kemper Arena was previously a 19,500-seat professional sports arena. Big 12 Men's Basketball Tournament
The Big 12 men's basketball tournament (known since its inception in 1997 under sponsorship agreements as the Phillips 66 Big 12 men's basketball tournament) is the championship men's basketball tournament in the Big 12 Conference. It is a single-elimination tournament of four rounds, with the top six seeds getting byes in the first round. Seeding is based on regular season records. The winner of the tournament receives the Big 12 Conference automatic bid to the NCAA Championship tournament. Between 2005 and 2019, no current Big 12 member besides Iowa State or Kansas won the tournament, and those two schools have won 16 of 24 titles. The remaining current Big 12 schools only account for six additional tournament titles. For its first twenty-three years, no school from outside the original Big Eight Conference had ever won the tournament. Haywood Christopher Owens (born March 1, 1979) is an American former professional basketball player. Standing at , he played the power forward position. College career Owens played one year at Tulane University before moving at The University of Texas at Austin, where he graduated in 2002. On December 29, 2001, he suffered a season ending knee injury in a loss against Utah. Professional career Owens was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2nd round of the 2002 NBA Draft, but he was then traded to the Memphis Grizzlies. He played in one NBA game with the Grizzlies. Owens' first and only NBA game was played on April 15, 2003 in a 86 - 97 loss to the Houston Rockets where he recorded 4 points and 1 rebound. Hollis Price (born October 29, 1979) is an American former professional basketball player. He is currently an assistant coach for the University of Houston men's basketball program. College career Price played college basketball at the University of Oklahoma from 1999 to 2003. He helped to lead the Sooners to the Final Four in 2002.
