1st Primetime Emmy Awards
The 1st Emmy Awards, retroactively known as the 1st Primetime Emmy Awards after the debut of the counterpart Daytime Emmy Awards, were presented at the Hollywood Athletic Club in Los Angeles on Tuesday, January 25, 1949. Only shows produced in Los Angeles County, California and aired in the Los Angeles media market were eligible to win. The awards were hosted by Walter O'Keefe who substituted for Rudy Vallée when he had to leave town at the last minute. A special award category was introduced and awarded to Louis McManus for designing the actual Emmy Award statuette. Hollywood Athletic Club
The Hollywood Athletic Club is an office building and event space in the Hollywood district of Los Angeles. Since it was built in 1924, it has had a varied history as a health club, bar, music venue, and billiard room. It is located on Sunset Boulevard. History The building at 6525 Sunset Blvd has been known as the Hollywood Athletic Club, University of Judaism, Berwin Entertainment Complex, and Hollywood Landmark. It was completed in 1924 and designed by Meyer & Holler, the same architectural firm that built the Grauman's Chinese Theatre and the Egyptian Theatre. At the time, it was the tallest building in Hollywood. When the Hollywood Athletic Club opened in 1924, Hollywood was entering its greatest and most productive period. Primetime Emmy Award Ceremonies
Prime time or the peak time is the block of broadcast programming taking place during the middle of the evening for a television show. It is mostly targeted towards adults (and sometimes families). It is used by the major television networks to broadcast their season's nightly programming. Bill Welsh
Bill Welsh (April 25, 1911 – February 27, 2000) was a radio and television announcer. Early years Welsh born in Greeley, Colorado, the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Welsh. He attended the Colorado State College of Education. Career Welsh's career in broadcasting began with a part-time job at radio station KFKA in Greely. Beginning as a disk jockey and announcer, he expanded his work into gathering news and giving evening newscasts. His coverage of the murder of a police sergeant caught the attention of executives at KFEL radio in Denver, and he went to work there next, staying at that station from 1935 to 1942. Welsh's television debut came in the broadcast of a hockey game on KTLA in Los Angeles. Mike Stokey
Mike Stokey (September 14, 1918 – September 7, 2003) was an American game show host and producer, best known for ''Pantomime Quiz'' and its later incarnation '' Stump the Stars''. He also produced early TV specials, including ''A Christmas Carol'' in 1949, for the Jerry Fairbanks Company. Stokey also hosted ''Beat the Odds'' while it was presented at KTLA. His former wife (1943-1948) was actress Pamela Blake, with whom he had one son, Mike Stokey II, and a daughter, Barbara. Shirley Dinsdale Layburn (October 31, 1926 – May 9, 1999), better known by her maiden name of Shirley Dinsdale, was an American ventriloquist and television and radio personality of the 1940s and early 1950s. She is best remembered for her dummy "Judy Splinters" and for the early 15-minute children's television show that bears that name. In 1949, she received the first Emmy award (first award in the first presentation) for Outstanding Television Personality when she was a student at UCLA. After her television career, she also achieved success in a second career as a cardiopulmonary therapist. Early life Dinsdale was born in San Francisco, California in 1926. After being badly burned in a household accident when she was 5 years old, she was given a ventriloquist's dummy by her father, who manufactured dummies for department stores, as part of her recovery.
