1st Army Corps (Armenia)
The 1st Army Corps ( hy, 1-ին բանակային կորպուս), also known as the 1st Military Unit is a regional military formation of the Armenian Army, located in the city of Goris''Jane's World Armies''. Coulsdon, Surrey, UK: Jane's Information Group, October 2004. in the Syunik Province. It helps make up Armenia's southeastern military positions. Overview After the First Nagorno-Karabakh War, the development of army building imposed the need to form large military units. This resulted in the corps creation on 20 June 1996 at the initiative of General Yuri Khatchaturov. On its 18th anniversary in 2014, the Governor of Syunik Vahe Hakobyan donated 30 TV sets to the corps. A tank crew of the corps participated in the "Tank Biathlon-2017" international competition. In September 2020, a subdivision of the corps participated in the "Caucasus-2020" command-staff military exercise in Russia. The Ministry of Defence of Armenia ( hy, Հայաստանի պաշտպանության նախարարություն) often abbreviated to the RA Ministry of Defence is an Armenian governmental agency in charge of overseeing the development of the Armed Forces of Armenia. The Ministry of Defense is also the executive body which implements the policies of the Armenian Government in the defense sector. Manvel Grigoryan
Lieutenant General Manvel Sektori Grigoryan (Armenian: Մանվել Սեկտորի Գրիգորյան; 14 July 1956 – 19 November 2020) was an Armenian military leader and a member of the National Assembly of Armenia. At one point he was one of the highest-ranking officials in the Armenian Army, serving as Deputy Minister of Defense from 2000 to 2008. He served as the president of the Yerkrapah Volunteer Union from 1999 to 2018. Early life and First Karabakh War Manvel Grigoryan was born on 14 July 1956 in the village of Arshaluys in Armavir province. He served in the Soviet Army from 1975 to 1977. He graduated from Stepanakert State University in 1993 and Yerevan State University in 1998. Sisian
Sisian ( hy, Սիսիան) is a town and the centre of the urban community of Sisian, in the Syunik Province in southern Armenia. It is located on the Vorotan River, 6 km south of the Yerevan-Meghri highway, at a road distance of 217 km southeast of the capital Yerevan, and 115 km north of the provincial centre Kapan. As of the 2011 census, the population of the town was 14,894. As per the 2016 official estimate, the population of Sisian is around 12,900. Kapan
Kapan ( hy, Կապան) is a town in southeast Armenia, serving as the administrative center of the urban community of Kapan as well as the provincial capital of Syunik Province. It is located in the valley of the Voghji River and is on the northern slopes of Mount Khustup. According to the 2011 census, the population of Kapan was 43,190, a slight decline from 45,711 in the 2001 census. However, the current population of the town is around 34,600 as per the 2016 official estimate. Kapan is the most populous town in the Syunik Province as well as the entire region of southern Armenia. The 14th Independent Motorized Rifle Regiment ( hy, 14-րդ առանձին մոտոհրաձգային գունդը) is a military formation of the Armenian Army, located in the city of Kapan. It is a recipient of the Order of Combat Cross of the First Degree. History 83rd and 97th Motorized Rifle Brigades The predecessor unit is the 83rd Motorized Rifle Brigade and the 97th Motorized Rifle Brigade, both of which served during the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. The 97th brigade, which was founded on 12 January 1993, was tasked with the protection of the south-eastern borders of Armenia. Qaraxanbəyli (also, Karakhanbeyli) is an uninhabited village in the Fuzuli District of Azerbaijan. Vardan Mamikonian
Vardan Mamikonian ( hy, Վարդան Մամիկոնեան; – 451) was an Armenian military leader who led a rebellion against Sasanian Iran in 450–451. He was the head of the Mamikonian noble family and holder of the hereditary title of , the supreme commander of the Armenian armed forces. Vardan and most of his comrades died at the Battle of Avarayr in 451, but their sacrifice was immortalized in the works of the Armenian historians Yeghishe and Ghazar Parpetsi. Goris
Goris ( hy, Գորիս) is a town and the centre of the urban community of Goris, in Syunik Province at the south of Armenia. Located in the valley of the Goris (or Vararak) River, it is 254 km from the Armenian capital Yerevan and 67 km from the provincial capital Kapan.
