1999–2000 Liga Artzit ...
The 1999–2000 Liga Artzit season was the first in which Liga Artzit was the third tier of Israeli football due to the formation of the Israeli Premier League. Only the champions, Hapoel Ramat Gan, were promoted as restructuring continued in the divisions above. Hapoel Ironi Dimona and Hapoel Iksal were relegated to Liga Alef. At the end of the season Beitar Tel Aviv and Shimshon Tel Aviv merged to form Beitar Shimshon Tel Aviv. The spare place in the division was filled by promoting the third-best club from Liga Alef rather than reprieving Hapoel Ironi Dimona. Liga Artzit
Liga Artzit ( he, ליגה ארצית, lit. ''Country League'') is the defunct third division of Israeli Football League, beneath its highest division Premier League and the second division Liga Leumit. Before being cancelled in 2009, it was run by the Israel Football Association. It was replaced by Liga Alef. Structure There were 12 teams in Liga Artzit. Each team played 33 matches; the first 22 matches were played on a home and away basis, with the last 11 fixtures based on league positions after 22 games. Like the majority of leagues in the world, three points were awarded for a win, one for a draw and zero for a loss. Final League positions were determined firstly by points obtained, then by goal difference, then goals scored, and if necessary, a mini-league of the results between two or more teams ranked using the previous three criteria and finally a series of one or more play off matches. 2000–01 Liga Leumit
The 2000–01 Liga Leumit season saw Hapoel Be'er Sheva and Maccabi Kiryat Gat promoted to the Israeli Premier League, the latter for the first time in their history. Maccabi Ironi Kiryat Ata and Hapoel Jerusalem were relegated to Liga Artzit. Abed Titi of Maccabi Ahi Nazareth was the league's top scorer with 22 goals. Following the first three rounds (33 games), the table was split into two, with teams from the "Upper group" and "Lower group" playing each other once more to make a total of 38 matches. The split meant that clubs in the bottom six could not finish above those in the top six, even though the four clubs finishing 7th-10th finished with more points that the 5th- and 6th-placed clubs. Football as an organised sport, first developed in the United Kingdom, who controlled Mandatory Palestine during the days of the British Mandate. The Israel Football Association joined the Asian Football Confederation in 1954, but was expelled in 1974 due to political pressure from Arab and Muslim members in the context of the Arab–Israeli conflict. In the late 1970s and 1980s, the Israel Football Association was not affiliated with any confederation. The Betar Movement ( he, תנועת בית"ר), also spelled Beitar (), is a Revisionist Zionist youth movement founded in 1923 in Riga, Latvia, by Vladimir (Ze'ev) Jabotinsky. Chapters sprang up across Europe, even during World War II.
