1999 World Weightlifting Championships
The 1999 World Weightlifting Championships were held at Peace and Friendship Stadium in Piraeus, Athens, Greece from November 21 to November 28, 1999. It was the main qualifying events in the sport for the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. Piraeus
Piraeus ( ; el, Πειραιάς ; grc, Πειραιεύς ) is a port city within the Athens urban area ("Greater Athens"), in the Attica region of Greece. Shi Zhiyong (; born February 10, 1980 in Longyan, Fujian) is a Chinese weightlifter. He became Olympic Champion during the 2004 Summer Olympics. He lifted a total of 325 kg, equalising the World record at that time. Shi participated in the men's 69 kg class at the 2005 and 2006 World Weightlifting Championships. Pyrros Dimas
Pyrros Dimas ( el, Πύρρος Δήμας; ; born 13 October 1971) is a Greek politician and former weightlifter. He is currently the technical director for USA Weightlifting, having taken that position in June 2017. Dimas has also been involved in politics as a member of the Hellenic Parliament, representing the Panhellenic Socialist Movement from 2012 to 2015. Dimas is the most decorated Greek athlete in the Olympics and is widely considered one of the greatest weightlifters of all time, having been three times Olympic Gold Medalist (in his fourth Olympiad, a knee injury notwithstanding, he won the bronze medal), and three times World Champion. Nader Sufyan Abbas (born Andrey Ivanov ( bg, Андрей Иванов) on 12 December 1975) is a Qatari weightlifter who competed in the Men's weight class at the 2004 Summer Olympics and finished 9th. He is the 2001 world champion. One of eight Bulgarian weightlifters recruited by the Qatar Olympic Committee for $1,000,000, Abbas became a Qatari citizen to represent the country in the 2000 Olympics. Viktor Mitrou (Βίκτωρ Μήτρου; born June 24, 1973) is a retired male Greek weightlifter. He initially represented Albania, but became internationally distinguished with the Greece national team. Plamen Jelyazkov (original name: Пламен Желязков, born in Asenovgrad) is a Bulgarian male weightlifter, competing in the 77 kg category and representing Bulgaria at international competitions. Khachatur Kyapanaktsyan ( hy, Խաչատուր Քյափանակցյան; June 24, 1968 – September 30, 2007) was an Armenian weightlifter. He set two world records in the snatch. Valerios Leonidis ( el, Βαλέριος Λεωνίδης; born February 14, 1966) is a Greek former Olympic medalist weightlifter and current weightlifting trainer. Galabin Boevski
Galabin Boevski ( bg, Гълъбин Боевски, born 19 December 1974) is a Bulgarian weightlifter. He was born in Knezha, and was both world and Olympic champion. He was later suspended for eight years after failing drug tests. Boevski was sentenced to nine years and four months in prison in Brazil for cocaine trafficking. He was arrested in October 2011 while trying to board a plane in São Paulo, Brazil, to Europe with 9 kilos of cocaine. In October 2012, the appellate court of Brazil decided against reducing his sentence. On 23 October 2013, he returned to Bulgaria. Asked how, he did not comment. The Bulgarian government stated that the release was a unilateral act by Brazil and they do not know of any details. Marcus Ajemada Stephen (born 1 October 1969) is a Nauruan politician and former sportsperson who previously was a member of the Cabinet of Nauru, and who served as President of Nauru from December 2007 to November 2011. The son of Nauruan parliamentarian Lawrence Stephen, Stephen was educated at St Bedes College and RMIT University in Victoria, Australia.
