World Judo Championships
The World Judo Championships are the highest level of international judo competition, along with the Judo at the Summer Olympics, Olympic judo competition. The championships are held once every year (except the years when the Olympics take place) by the International Judo Federation, and qualified judoka compete in their respective categories as representatives of their home countries. Team competitions have also been held since 1994. The men's championships 1956 World Judo Championships, began in 1956, though the format and periodicity of the championships have changed over time. 2022 World Judo Championships, The last edition of the championships took place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in 2022. Dennis Van Der Geest
Dennis van der Geest (; born 27 June 1975) is a Dutch judoka, who won the bronze medal in the men's heavyweight (+ 100 kg) division at the 2004 Summer Olympics. He was born in Haarlem, North Holland. In 2005, he became the world judo champion in the men's open division by defeating Russian Tamerlan Tmenov with ippon in the final. In 2000 and 2002, he became European Champion in the over 100 kg event. He won three bronze medals and one silver medal at previous world championships. Shinichi Shinohara
is a retired Japanese judo and winner of the gold medal at the 1999 World Judo Championships in Birmingham. To Shinohara's disappointment, French champion David Douillet did not compete at Birmingham due to back injury; Shinohara was quoted as saying, "Even though I lifted the double crown at the worlds, it won't mean anything as long as people say it was won in Douillet's absence." Douillet had previously been declared victor at the 1997 championships in Paris after a French judge gave Shinohara a controversial penalty. Three years after, Shinohara received the silver medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics when he was defeated by Douillet due to another disputed judgment about Uchi Mata Sukashi in the finals which was strongly protested by the Japanese participants. Nicolas Gill
Nicolas Gill (born 24 April 1972 in Montreal, Quebec) is a Canadian judoka who competed at four consecutive Olympic Games. He is a two-time Olympic medalist, receiving a bronze in the middleweight (86 kg) division at his inaugural Olympiad in Barcelona. He received a silver medal in the men's half-heavyweight (100 kg) division at the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympics. Gill was honored by his teammates as Canada's flag bearer in the opening ceremony at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. A mild controversy developed after it was revealed that Gill had made comments in favour of Quebec separatism, and had voted 'yes' in the 1995 Quebec referendum. Gill went on the lose his opening match which eliminated him from the tournament. In 2007, he received the ''prix reconnaissance'' from UQAM as a TÉLUQ student.
