1999 US Open – Women's Singles
Serena Williams defeated Martina Hingis in the final, 6–3, 7–6(7–4) to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1999 US Open. It was her first major singles title, the first of an eventual Open Era joint-record six US Open titles, and the first of an eventual Open Era record 23 major singles titles. Williams became the first African American woman in the Open Era to win a singles major. Lindsay Davenport was the defending champion, but lost to Williams in the semifinals. Sandrine Testud (born 3 April 1972) is a former professional tennis player from France. Career Testud broke into top 20 singles rankings in July 1997. On February 7, 2000, she became the sixth Frenchwoman after Françoise Dürr, Mary Pierce, Nathalie Tauziat, Amélie Mauresmo and Julie Halard to break into the top 10 in the singles rankings. This marked the first time France had four women ranked in the singles top 10 simultaneously (Mary Pierce at No. 5, Nathalie Tauziat at No. 6, Julie Halard at No. 8 and Testud at No. 9). Jennifer Dent (born February 10, 1981, as Jennifer Hopkins) is an American former professional tennis player. She won seven singles titles on the ITF Women's Circuit in her career and nearly cracked the top 50. In 2001, she reached her only WTA Tour singles final in Hobart (which she lost to Italian Rita Grande). In 2003, she played some ITF Circuit events, reaching the final in Atlanta and the semifinals at Dothan. In 2002, she won her only WTA doubles title at Strasbourg, partnering with Jelena Kostanić. Květoslava Peschke (née Hrdličková; born 9 July 1975) is a Czech retired professional tennis player who was ranked world No. 1 in doubles. She reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 26 in November 2005, winning one WTA singles title in Makarska in 1998, but achieved most of her success in doubles. She is the middle sibling of five children of cane farmers and was taught to play by her father, George, who was a top junior player.
