The 1999 Superbike World Championship was the twelfth FIM Superbike World Championship season. The season started on 28 March at Kyalami and finished on 10 October at Sugo after 13 rounds. 1999 Supersport World Championship
The 1999 Supersport World Championship was the first season of the Supersport World Championship, the third taking into account the previous two seasons, when the competition was known as ''Supersport World Series''. For the first year, the series was recognised by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme, FIM as a World Championship instead of as an ''FIM Prize''. The season began on 28 March at Kyalami and finished on 12 September at Hockenheimring after 11 rounds. South African rider Brett MacLeod had a fatal accident at the Kyalami race. Stéphane Chambon won the riders' championship and Yamaha Motor Company, Yamaha won the manufacturers' championship. Akira Yanagawa
is a Japanese former professional motorcycle road racer. He won three World Superbike Championship races and finished on the podium on 20 further occasions. Career He started racing on mini-bikes before becoming Japan's 250cc champion in 1989. He moved to his homeland's Superbike championship in 1993. By Kawasaki considered him ready for the Superbike World Championship. Initial testing displays and results suggested that they were not wrong. At the A1-Ring, Yanagawa became the first Japanese rider to win a Superbike World Championship race outside his homeland, also winning Sugo later in the year to come 4th overall. was dominated by two huge crashes. At Monza the bike hurtled through the gravel at the Ascari Chicane before catching fire due to a burst fuel line, with Yanagawa nowhere near it. Ben Bostrom
Benjamin Bostrom (born May 7, 1974) is an American former professional motorcycle racer. From 1995 to 2011 he competed in the AMA Superbike Championship, the World Superbike Championship and the MotoGP world championship.. Motorcycle racing career The son of Dave Bostrom and nephew of Paul Bostrom, both successful dirt track racers, Bostrom began his motorcycle racing career in the same fashion by winning the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) 600 Dirt Track National Championship in 1993. He switched to road racing in 1995. Bostrom captured the AMA Superbike national championship as a Honda rider in 1998, without winning a race. A year later Bostrom, astride a Ducati and still racing full-time in the AMA series, won a Laguna Seca Raceway World Superbike race (and finished second in another) as a wild card entry. Anthony Gobert
Anthony Gobert (born 5 March 1975 in Greenacre, New South Wales, Australia) is a former professional motorcycle road racer, nicknamed The Go Show. He was a rider of immense promise and talent who had his career derailed by a personal struggle with drug abuse. Winning the final leg of the 1994 season at Philip Island, he became the youngest ever World Superbike race winner at the age of 19 years old, a record that was improved by 18-year-old Yuichi Takeda at Sugo in 1996. Gobert won that race at Phillip Island from Pole and is still (2020) the youngest rider (19 years, 7 months and 26 days) to do that. Laguna Seca Raceway
Laguna Seca Raceway (branded as WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, and previously Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca) is a paved road racing track in central California used for both auto racing and motorcycle racing, built in 1957 near both Salinas and Monterey, California, United States. The racetrack is long, with a elevation change. Its eleven turns are highlighted by the circuit's signature turn, the downhill-plunging "Corkscrew" at Turns 8 and 8A. A variety of racing, exhibition, and entertainment events are held at the raceway, ranging from superkarts to sports car racing to music festivals. Laguna Seca is classified as an FIA Grade Two circuit. The name Laguna Seca is Spanish for ''dry lagoon'': the area where the track now lies was once a lake, and the course was built around the dry lake bed.
