1999 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship
The 1999 NCAA Division I tournament championship game was played at University of Maryland's Byrd Stadium with an attendance of 24,135. Tournament overview In the tournament finals, the Virginia Cavaliers built a 9-3 lead by the third quarter, and held off the Syracuse Orange, the number eight seed, 12-10. This was Virginia's first NCAA title since 1972 and fourth overall including two pre-NCAA tournament Wingate Trophies in 1952 and 1970. Syracuse was the first number eight seed to make it to the title game. Virginia's Conor Gill was named the most outstanding player of the tournament, the first freshman ever to win that honor. Other notable players included Virginia's Jay Jalbert, Syracuse's Ryan Powell, and Delaware's player of the year, John Grant, Jr. Grant, Jr. led the Delaware Blue Hens to a number six national ranking and their first ever tournament win. NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship
The NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship tournament determines the annual top men's field lacrosse team in the NCAA Division I. This tournament has determined the national champion since the inaugural 1971 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship. From 1936 through 1970, the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) awarded the Wingate Memorial Trophy annually to the collegiate champion based on regular season records. History The first Division I Championship tournament held in 1971 replaced the USILA and Wingate Memorial Trophy national title awards. As of 2021, 50 NCAA tournaments have been held (not held in 2020). Dan Marohl
Dan Marohl (born March 30, 1978) is a former indoor lacrosse player for the Minnesota Swarm in the National Lacrosse League. Marohl attended the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where he was teammates with former Philadelphia Wings teammate Jeff Ratcliffe. In 1996, Marohl completed his senior year at St. Mary's High School in Annapolis, Maryland, where he led his team to a perfect 17–0 record in the ultra-competitive MIAA "A" Conference en route to the championship. Due to his excellence on the field, he was named the C. Markland Kelly Award winner - given annually to the most outstanding player in the MIAA. That year, The St. Mary's Saints finished the season ranked #1 in the national rankings by USLacrosse, making them the de facto High School National Champions. Doug Shanahan
Doug Shanahan (born January 11, 1979) is a lacrosse coach and player. He has been inducted into four Halls of Fame and has won a number of other trophies and accolades. He was twice a member of Team USA, and also won MVP of the world games. He attended Hofstra University, playing both football and lacrosse in college. Hofstra University From 1997 to 2001 Shanahan played both lacrosse and football. As a defensive back for the Pride, Shanahan was recognized as a 3 time All American in football. In 2000, he was also a Buck Buchanan Award finalist which is given to the top defensive player in Division 1AA. Following his senior year, he was signed as a free agent with the New York Jets. Steve Dusseau (born March 30, 1983) was an All-American lacrosse player for Georgetown University, where he was a two-time All-American and won the 2002 USILA National Player of the Year award. The Loyola Greyhounds men's lacrosse team represents Loyola University Maryland in NCAA Division I lacrosse. Its home matches are played at the Ridley Athletic Complex. The Navy Midshipmen men's lacrosse team represents the United States Naval Academy in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I men's lacrosse.
