1999 European Parliament Election In Spain
The 1999 European Parliament election in Spain was held on Sunday, 13 June 1999, as part of the EU-wide election to elect the 5th European Parliament. All 64 seats allocated to Spain as per the Treaty of Amsterdam were up for election. The election was held simultaneously with regional elections in thirteen autonomous communities and local elections all throughout Spain. The ruling People's Party (PP)—which for the first time contested a nationwide election in Spain while in government—emerged as the largest political force in the country, albeit with a diminished victory margin than in the previous election held in 1994. The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), in opposition for the first time since 1982, recovered some ground from its previous result. European Parliament
The European Parliament (EP) is one of the legislative bodies of the European Union and one of its seven institutions. Together with the Council of the European Union (known as the Council and informally as the Council of Ministers), it adopts European legislation, following a proposal by the European Commission. The Parliament is composed of 705 members (MEPs). It represents the second-largest democratic electorate in the world (after the Parliament of India), with an electorate of 375 million eligible voters in 2009. Since 1979, the Parliament has been directly elected every five years by the citizens of the European Union through universal suffrage. The Group of the European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party (french: link=no, Groupe du parti européen des libéraux, démocrates et réformateurs, ELDR) was a liberal political group of the European Parliament between 1976 and 2004. The group comprised the European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party and its constituent national-level parties, variously of liberal, centrist and agrarian orientation. Its predecessors have existed since 23 June 1953, then under the name of ''Liberals and Allies Group''. In 1976, the name was changed to ''Liberal and Democratic Group'' (LD), and on 13 December 1985 to ''Liberal and Democratic Reformist Group'' (LDR). 1999 European Parliament Election
The 1999 European Parliament election was a European election for all 626 members of the European Parliament held across the 15 European Union member states on 10, 11 and 13 June 1999. The voter turn-out was generally low, except in Belgium and Luxembourg, where voting is compulsory and where national elections were held that same day. This was the first election where Austria, Finland and Sweden voted alongside the other member states, having joined in 1995 and voted separately. The next election was held in 2004. Jesús María Sáenz "Josu" Ortuondo (born 6 November 1951) is a Spanish retired footballer who played as a right winger, and a manager. Playing career Born in Ondarroa, Biscay, Basque Country, Ortuondo was an Athletic Bilbao youth graduate. On 14 September 1969, before even having appeared for the reserves, he made his first team – and La Liga – debut, coming on as a second-half substitute for José Argoitia in a 2–0 home win against RCD Mallorca. Ortuondo scored his first goal in the main category of Spanish football on 5 October 1969, netting his team's second in a 2–3 away loss against FC Barcelona. He would move back to the B-side in the second level for the remainder of the season, which ended in relegation.
