1999 Dubai World Cup
The 1999 Dubai World Cup was a horse race held at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse on Sunday 28 March 1999. It was the 4th running of the Dubai World Cup. The winner was Hamdan Al Maktoum's Almutawakel, a four-year-old bay colt trained in Dubai by Saeed bin Suroor and ridden by Richard Hills. Almutawakel's victory was the first in the race for his owner, trainer and jockey. Almutawakel had been campaigned on turf in Europe in 1997 and 1998, recording his most important success Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly Racecourse in May 1998. The 1999 Dubai World Cup attracted a strong field including Silver Charm (the previous year's winner) and Victory Gallop from North America, while the Godolphin stable were represented by Daylami and High-Rise. Racing on dirt for the first time Almutawakel took the lead in the straight and won by three-quarters of a length from Malek with Victory Gallop three-quarters of a length away in third. Dubai World Cup
The Dubai World Cup (Arabic: كأس دبي العالمي) is a Thoroughbred horse race held annually since 1996 and contested at the Meydan Racecourse (Arabic: ميدان) which in Arabic suggests a place where people congregate and compete, a sort of meeting point in the Emirate of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The race is operated through the Emirates Racing Authority (ERA) whose Chairman is Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Presidential Affairs of the United Arab Emirates. It offers nine races, consisting of eight Thoroughbred contests and one Purebred Arabian contest. The Dubai World Cup, the final race of Dubai World Cup night, was created in 1996 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai who owns Darley Stud & Godolphin Racing, one of the world's leading Thoroughbred breeding and racing operations. Malek (horse)
Malek was a Chilean-bred racehorse. He raced with considerable success in South America before being exported to the United States where he recorded his biggest win in the 1998 Santa Anita Handicap. Background Malek was a bay horse with a stripebred in Chile by the Haras Mocito Guapo. He was sired by the Argentinian stallion Mocito Guapo, a grandson of the American champion Nashua, out of the locally bred mare Condegnita. Malek was bred on the same Mocito Guapo–Chairman Walker cross as the undefeated mare Moscona. Racing career Malek debuted on March 18th, 1996, in a 1200-meter race at Club HÃpico de Santiago, in which he finished fourth. Malek broke his maiden in May at Hipódromo Chile, and later that month won the Group Three Clásico Victor Matetic Fernandez. In June, in his last race as a two-year-old, Malek won the Group One Tanteo de Potrillos by about three-quarters of a length.
