1998–99 Reading F.C. Season
The 1998–99 season was Reading's 128th year in existence and first season back in the Second Division, since the 1993–94 season, and covers the period from 1 July 1998 to 30 June 1999. Reading finished the season in 11th position, were knocked out of the FA Cup at the First Round by Stoke City, the Football League Cup by Barnsley in the Second Round and the First Round of the Football League Trophy by Bournemouth. It was the club's first full season with Tommy Burns as manager, and their first at their new Madejski Stadium. Jamie Ashdown
Jamie Lawrence Ashdown (born 30 November 1980) is an English former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He spent a large part of his career at Portsmouth, for whom he made the majority of his professional appearances. He came out of retirement in July 2022 to sign for Ascot United F.C. where he had previously been a goalkeeping coach. Club career Reading Born in Reading, Berkshire, Ashdown began his career at Reading when he was eight years old. Ashdown then established a reputation as an exciting prospect for the club. He signed his professional contract with Reading in February 1998. On 12 September 2000, Ashdown made his league debut for the club, coming on as a 74th-minute substitute for Phil Whitehead, and played the rest of the game, as he kept a clean in a 5–0 win against Oldham Athletic. Andy Gurney
Andrew Gurney (born 25 January 1974) is an English former professional footballer. He played at right-back as well as in the centre of defence, central midfield or as a sweeper. He manages Roman Glass St George. Playing career Early life and beginnings of career Gurney was born in Bristol, England, and began his career as an apprentice with his hometown club Bristol Rovers, turning professional in July 1992. His league debut came in the 1993–94 season and he went on to make 108 league appearances scoring 9 goals before being released in the summer of 1997. Chris Casper
Christopher Martin Casper (born 28 April 1975) is an English football manager and former player who is now the director of football at League Two side Salford City. As a player he was a defender who played in the Premier League for Manchester United and in the Football League for AFC Bournemouth, Swindon Town and Reading. An injury forced him to retire from playing in 2000 at the age of 24. Casper proceeded into management and took charge of Team Bath in 2002 before moving to Football League Two club Bury for three years. Anthony Barras (born 29 March 1971) is an English former professional footballer who played as a centre-back in the Football League for Hartlepool United, Stockport County, Rotherham United, York City, Reading, Walsall, Plymouth Argyle, Notts County and Macclesfield Town. Motherwell ( sco, Mitherwall, gd, Tobar na Màthar) is a town and former burgh in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, United Kingdom, south east of Glasgow. It has a population of around 32,120. Scott Howie (born 4 January 1972) is a Scottish former professional Association football, football goalkeeper. Having played professionally in the English and Scottish football leagues, he last played for English non-league side Wroxham F.C., Wroxham. Howie played for local non-league side Ferguslie United before joining Clyde F.C., Clyde in 1991, continuing to study for his Business Degree.
