1998–99 Newcastle United F.C. Season
In the 1998–99 season, Newcastle United competed in the FA Premier League (known as the FA Carling Premiership for sponsorship reasons). Newcastle's season was an almost carbon copy of the one before. They finished 13th in the Premiership and lost in the FA Cup final to enter Europe because the winning side had already qualified for the Champions League. Just after the season started, Kenny Dalglish paid for Newcastle's sub-standard league performances with his job. The task was given to Ruud Gullit to turn things round, but he could not improve on the club's previous league finish of 13th. A dismal league position put them below local rivals Middlesbrough as well as other unfancied sides including Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday. Lionel Pérez
Lionel Pérez (born 24 April 1967 in Bagnols-sur-Cèze, Gard) is a retired French professional footballer. He played as a goalkeeper and more recently was a goalkeeping coach at Stevenage Borough, following his retirement from the game in 2004. Georgios Georgiadis ( el, Γεώργιος Γεωργιάδης, born 8 March 1972) is a Greek former professional footballer, now a football coach. He made 61 appearances for the Greece national football team, and played for several Greek clubs including Panathinaikos FC and two spells at PAOK Thessaloniki FC. He was also signed by the English club Newcastle for a season. After retiring in 2008 he coached the Greece U21 side. 1999–2000 UEFA Cup
The 1999–2000 UEFA Cup season was the 29th edition of the UEFA Cup competition. The final took place at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen and was won by Galatasaray, who defeated Arsenal in the final. The game was scoreless through the first ninety minutes and stayed that way through thirty minutes of extra time. The match went on to penalty kicks in which Gheorghe Popescu scored the winning goal to win the cup. Galatasaray won the cup without losing a single game. The competition was marred by violence involving Turkish and English hooligans in the semi-finals and the final, in particular the fatal stabbings of Leeds United fans Kevin Speight and Christopher Loftus by Galatasaray fans in Istanbul. Robert Martin Lee (born 1 February 1966) is an English former professional footballer and sports co-commentator. As a player, he was a midfielder who notably played in the Premier League for Newcastle United and West Ham United. His time at St James Park saw him win the Football League First Division in 1993. He also played in the Football League for Charlton Athletic, Derby County, Oldham Athletic and Wycombe Wanderers.
