1998–99 Glasgow Warriors Season
The 1998–99 season is the third in the history of the Glasgow Warriors as a professional side. During this season the young professional side competed as Glasgow Caledonians. This season saw Glasgow Caledonians compete in the competitions: the Scottish Inter-District Championship and the European Champions Cup, the Heineken Cup - as well as the Welsh Rugby Union's Challenge Cup. Season Overview This proved to be one of the most turbulent years in the club's existence. The SRU decided to reduce the number of professional teams in Scotland from 4 to 2. Only Glasgow and Edinburgh now remained standing; with Glasgow taking over the Caledonia district – and Edinburgh taking over the Borders district. The fall-out from this caused many professional players to lose their jobs and created managerial problems at Glasgow. Hughenden Stadium
Hughenden is a multi-sports venue in the Hyndland area of Glasgow, Scotland. It has been the home since 1924 of Hillhead Sports Club, a private members' club catering for cricket, rugby union and tennis. Hughenden is best known as a rugby venue and is the home ground of Hillhead Jordanhill RFC. It was also used as the home ground of the professional Glasgow Rugby team from 1996 to 2005 and again from 2006 to 2007. The main rugby ground has a capacity of 6,000. History Hillhead Sports Club was formed in 1902 as a private club for former pupils of Hillhead High School, catering for various sports including football, cricket, hockey and athletics. Caledonia Reds
Caledonia Reds were a Scottish rugby union professional district team who participated in the Scottish Inter-District Championship and in two seasons of the Heineken Cup. They evolved from one of the traditional four amateur districts of Scotland, North and Midlands, in 1996. Their home games were shared between Aberdeen and Perth. Previous Scottish national coach Frank Hadden once held the assistant coaching position with the Caledonia Reds. In 1998, the SRU took the decision to merge the side with the Glasgow Rugby team, who today are known as the Glasgow Warriors. The Caledonia district still exists: it does not field a side in the United Rugby Championship league, but it does have competitive age grade teams in Inter-District Championships. Kevin McKenzie (rugby Union)
Kevin Duncan McKenzie (born 22 January 1968, Stirling, Scotland) is a former Scotland international rugby union player. Rugby Union career Amateur career McKenzie played as a hooker. He played for Stirling County. Provincial and professional career He played for Glasgow District when rugby union was an amateur game. When rugby union was professionalised, McKenzie played for Caledonia Reds. The Reds were disbanded in 1998, and McKenzie then played for Glasgow Warriors. He made his competitive debut for the professional Glasgow district on 13 September 1998, against Edinburgh Rugby at Easter Road in the Scottish Inter-District Championship. Chris Docherty
Chris Docherty (born 14 November 1976 in Scotland) is a Scottish former rugby union player who played for Glasgow Warriors at the Hooker position. He played once in the Heineken Cup for Glasgow, in the season 1997-98 against Leicester Tigers, coming off the bench. Glasgow lost the match 90 - 19 in the Quarter Final play-off. He was announced in Glasgow's Heineken Cup squad of 2001 - 02. The Hooker started out his amateur career with Glasgow High Kelvinside. On GHK merge with Glasgow Academicals in 1997 to form the Glasgow Hawks; he played for the new club. Docherty played for the amateur club side Glasgow Hawks and captained them in season 2001 - 02. Rob Moffat
Rob Moffat is a Scottish rugby union coach. He was the assistant coach at Edinburgh under Andy Robinson before taking over as head coach in 2009 and has been involved in coaching Scotland A, Glasgow Warriors and the Borders. On 31 January 2011 he was sacked by Edinburgh following a disappointing start to the season. Career As a PE teacher and head of department at Galashiels Academy Moffat taught the likes of Gregor Townsend, John Collins, Chris Paterson and Geoff Cross. He went on to take over from Jim Telfer as the Melrose coach in the early 1990s before becoming assistant coach at the Borders when the game turned professional in 1997. When that team was merged with Edinburgh he joined Glasgow before returning to the borders when the team was revived. Gordon Macpherson
Gordon Macpherson (born 9 October 1962) is a former New Zealand rugby union player. A lock, Macpherson represented Poverty Bay and Otago at a provincial level. He played a single match for the New Zealand national side, the All Blacks, a test against France in 1986. He moved from Otago in 1993 to Scotland where he was player-coach for West of Scotland. West of Scotland is an amateur rugby club based in Milngavie, near Glasgow. He was to marry a Scot and settle in Scotland. He became a forwards coach in Scotland. Glasgow District (rugby Union)
Glasgow District was a Scottish amateur rugby union team which now plays as the professional provincial side Glasgow Warriors. Founded in 1872 it was a select provincial amateur rugby union team that drew its players mainly from the Greater Glasgow area, as well as others from the rest of the west of Scotland; roughly corresponding to the old Strathclyde regional council area. Historically the Glasgow District team played matches against touring teams visiting Scotland from abroad, and also competed in the Scottish Inter-District Championship. The Glasgow District rugby union team was founded in 1872. The team played the world's first inter-district match that year against Edinburgh District rugby union team. Ian McGeechan
Sir Ian Robert McGeechan, OBE (born 30 October 1946) is a retired Scottish rugby union player, coach and teacher. Born in Leeds, McGeechan represented Headingley as his only club during a 15-year club career, qualifying for Scotland through his father he played 32 times internationally for Scotland over 7 years and won 8 caps on two tours for the British & Irish Lions. During his playing career he worked as a teacher. Upon retiring from player McGeechan began coaching, in a career spanning 26 years he coached the most recent Scottish side to win a grandslam in the 1990 Five Nations Championship, and won Premiership Rugby & the European Cup with London Wasps in 2008 & 2007.
