Tung Chee-hwa (; born 7 July 1937) is a Hong Kong businessman and politician who served as the first Chief Executive of Hong Kong between 1997 and 2005, upon the transfer of sovereignty on 1 July. He is currently a vice-chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). Born as the eldest son of Chinese shipping magnate Tung Chao Yung, who founded Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL), Tung took over the family business after his father's death in 1981. Four years later, OOCL teetered on the edge of bankruptcy, and the business was saved by the People's Republic of China government through Henry Fok in 1986. He was appointed an unofficial member of the Executive Council of Hong Kong by the last British Governor Chris Patten in 1992 and was tipped as Beijing's favourite as the first Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR. Miss Chinese International Pageant 1998 was held on January 25, 1998 in Hong Kong. The pageant was broadcast live through TVB and was streamed for the first time in Malaysia. Miss Chinese International 1997 Monica Lo of Toronto, Ontario, Canada crowned Louisa Luk of San Francisco, USA as the new winner. Luk is the first winner from the United States and San Francisco's only winner, as of 2010. Pageant information The theme to this year's pageant is "Beautiful Shadows from The Land of the Gods, Ten Years of Love from the Dragons" 「神洲儷影 十載龍情」. Jordan Road Ferry Pier or Ferry Point (1924–1998) () is a demolished pier originally located at Jordan Road, Hong Kong, Jordan Road, Jordan, Hong Kong. History After Hongkong and Yaumati Ferry gained the franchise to operate part of the cross harbour ferry routes, including the Central, Hong Kong, Central – Yau Ma Tei route, starting from 1 January 1924, the company set up Yaumatei Ferry Pier at Public Square Street for its ferry operations. In 1933, a new vehicular ferry route from Central to Yau Ma Tei was started, and Jordan Road Ferry Pier was built to handle vehicular ferries. Original ferry operations also moved to the new pier. A new bus terminus was built outside the pier. However, the demand for the pier started to decline after the opening of Cross-Harbour Tunnel in 1972 and commencement of complete operation of the Modified Initial System of MTR in 1980. The 1998 Hong Kong Legislative Council election was held on 24 May 1998 for members of the 1st Legislative Council of Hong Kong (LegCo) since the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) in 1997. Replacing the Provisional Legislative Council (PLC) strictly controlled by the Beijing government and boycotted by the pro-democracy camp, the elections returned 20 members from directly elected geographical constituencies, 10 seats from the Election Committee constituency and 30 members from functional constituencies, of which 10 were uncontested. Kai Tak Airport was the international airport of Hong Kong from 1925 until 1998. Officially known as Hong Kong International Airport from 1954 to 6 July 1998, it is often referred to as Hong Kong International Airport, Kai Tak, or simply Kai Tak and Kai Tak International Airport, to distinguish it from its successor, Chek Lap Kok International Airport, built on reclaimed and levelled land around the islands of Chek Lap Kok and Lam Chau, to the west. Because of the geography of the area positioning the airport with water on three sides of the runway, with Kowloon City's residential apartment complexes and 2000-plus foot mountains to the north-east of the airport, aircraft could not fly over the mountains and quickly drop in for a final approach.
