The 1998 World Lacrosse Championship final between Canada men's national lacrosse team, Canada and the United States men's national lacrosse team, United States was the gold medal game of the 1998 World Lacrosse Championship and has been often cited as the best field lacrosse game of all time. Context The United States had not lost an international lacrosse game since the 1978 WLC final, up until then, their only loss in international competition. Canada Men's National Lacrosse Team
The Canadian men's national lacrosse team represents Canada in men's international lacrosse competitions. The team is governed by the Canadian Lacrosse Association, which is a member of World Lacrosse, the international governing body for lacrosse. Traditionally Canada has been one of the leading nations in international play, placing among the top three at the World Lacrosse Championship every year since the tournament's inaugural year in 1967. William Beroza
William Beroza is an American lacrosse goalie, coach and member of the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Beroza played lacrosse at Hempstead High School, and was an All-Division honoree. After graduating high school, he was the goalie for Roanoke College, where he was honored as Honorable Mention All-American in 1976, and Second Team All-American in 1977. In his senior year, he helped lead the team to the NCAA Division II/III semi-finals where he set an NCAA record 30 saves in a playoff game. In 1987, he was inducted into the Roanoke College Athletic Hall of Fame. During the next 20 years, Beroza played for numerous different post-collegiate club teams, winning many honors and championships, including Player of the Year in 1978 and Championship Game Most Valuable Player in 1980. World Lacrosse (WL), formerly the Federation of International Lacrosse, is the international governing body of lacrosse, responsible for the men's, women's, and indoor versions of the sport. World Lacrosse Championship
The World Lacrosse Championship (WLC) is the international men's field lacrosse championship organized by World Lacrosse that occurs every four years. The WLC began before any international lacrosse organization had been formed. It started as a four-team invitational tournament which coincided with Canada's centennial lacrosse celebration in 1967. Canada, the United States, Australia, and England participated. Seven years later, Australia celebrated its lacrosse centenary and another four-team invitational tournament was held between the same countries. After that tournament in 1974, the first international governing body for men's lacrosse was formed, the International Lacrosse Federation (ILF). The ILF merged with the women's governing body in 2008 to form the Federation of International Lacrosse, which changed its name to World Lacrosse in 2019. Pat McCabe (lacrosse Player)
Patrick "Pat" J. McCabe (born April 15, 1969) is a retired professional lacrosse player from the United States. In 2006, McCabe was elected to the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame. College career McCabe attended Syracuse University, where he was named All-American four times, including three times to the first team. Pat was also presented with the Schmeisser Award as the nations most outstanding defensive player in 1990. McCabe won three NCAA Championships at Syracuse. Professional career McCabe played defense for the Long Island Lizards of Major League Lacrosse from the 2001 season until he retired following the 2006 season. Tim Soudan
Tim Soudan is the current Head Coach for Chrome Lacrosse Club of the Premier Lacrosse League. He joined the team after the conclusion of their 2019 season, replacing legendary coach Dom Starsia. Soudan is a former National Lacrosse League (NLL) and Major League Lacrosse (MLL) player. Soudan was one year too early before the Olympic lacrosse team was formed, and was registered as a player but injured himself making him unable to play. Soudan also played in the NLL for the Boston Blazers (1991–1994) and the Rochester Knighthawks (1995–2005), and in the MLL for the Rochester Rattlers (2001–2003). Blake Miller (born July 9, 1972) is a professional lacrosse player from Manhasset, New York. He is an offensive-minded Midfielder. Kevin Finneran is an American lacrosse coach. In 2006, he was the head coach and general manager of Major League Lacrosse's Chicago Machine. Prior to becoming the team's first head coach Finneran had played in the MLL. He played with the Long Island Lizards from 2001 to 2004 and the Philadelphia Barrage in 2005. Kevin also played box lacrosse in the National Lacrosse League. He spent 12 years and won four NLL Championships with the Philadelphia Wings before signing as a free agent with the Toronto Rock, where he played one season and won another championship. Casey Powell (born February 18, 1976) is a Hall of Fame American former college and professional lacrosse player from West Carthage, New York. In 1998, he graduated from Syracuse University, where he was a four-time USILA All-American. Powell was the NCAA Division I Most Outstanding Player in 1997 and 1998. Powell was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2017. Powell played in Major League Lacrosse, the semi-professional field lacrosse league, from its first year in 2001 through 2016, although he played in only 8 games between 2009 and 2013. Darren Lowe was a three-time All-American NCAA lacrosse player at Brown University from 1989 to 1992 who led his team to three straight NCAA tournament quarterfinal appearances. Career Highlights During Lowe's four years at Brown, the team compiled a record of 45 wins and 16 losses, with the 1991 squad compiling a 13 and 1 record. The 1991 team went undefeated during the regular season and received a number two seeding in the NCAA tournament before finally falling to Maryland in the quarterfinals. Mark Millon
Mark Millon (born May 17, 1971) is a retired American lacrosse player who last played for the Rochester Rattlers of Major League Lacrosse. He attended Harborfields Highschool in Huntington, Long Island. He played collegiate lacrosse at the University of Massachusetts. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest lacrosse players of all time.
