The 1998 United States Senate election in Georgia was held November 3, 1998. Incumbent Republican Party (United States), Republican U.S. Senator Paul Coverdell won a second term in office, becoming the first of his party to ever win reelection to the U.S. Senate from Georgia. Coverdell would remain in the Senate until his death on July 18, 2000. Paul Douglas Coverdell (January 20, 1939 – July 18, 2000) was an American politician who served as a United States senator from Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia from 1993 until his death in 2000. A member of the Republican Party (United States), Republican Party, he previously served as the director of the Peace Corps from 1989 to 1991 under President George H. W. Bush. Early life Coverdell was born in Des Moines, Iowa in 1939 and lived much of his childhood in the Midwest. Coverdell graduated from Lee's Summit High School in Lees Summit, Missouri. and went on to graduate from the University of Missouri in 1961 with a degree in journalism. Michael J. Coles is an American entrepreneur, author, philanthropist, and politician. Coles was the co-founder of Great American Cookies, Great American Cookie Company and former CEO of Caribou Coffee. Coles was the 1996 Democratic nominee for the house of representatives in the Sixth District of Georgia, and the 1998 Democratic nominee for U.S senate. In 1994 Kennesaw State University named its school of business the Coles College of Business. Career In 1977, with co-founder Arthur Karp, Coles opened the first Great American Cookie Company location at Perimeter Mall with an investment of $8,000. From there, the company expanded and became a chain in the United States. In 1988, Coles sold the Great American Cookie company for $100 million. The 1996 House elections in Georgia occurred on November 5, 1996 to elect the members of the State of Georgia's delegation to the United States House of Representatives. Georgia had eleven seats in the House, apportioned according to the 1990 United States Census. These elections were held concurrently with the United States Senate elections of 1996 ( including one election in Georgia), the United States House elections in other states, and various state and local elections. Following the United States Supreme Court's ruling in the 1995 case Miller v. Johnson, the Second, based in Southwest Georgia, and then-Eleventh districts, which previously stretched from Atlanta to Savannah, were dismantled after being found unconstitutional for violating the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, according to the interpretation in Shaw v. 1998 United States Senate Elections
The 1998 United States Senate elections were held on November 3 and seen as an even contest between the Republican Party and Democratic Party. While the Democrats had to defend more seats up for election, Republican attacks on the morality of President Bill Clinton failed to connect with voters and anticipated Republican gains did not materialize. The Republicans picked up open seats in Ohio and Kentucky and narrowly defeated Democratic incumbent Carol Moseley Braun (Illinois), but these were canceled out by the Democrats' gain of an open seat in Indiana and defeats of Republican Senators Al D'Amato ( New York) and Lauch Faircloth (North Carolina).
