1998 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships
The 1998 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships were held in Middelfart, Denmark on Saturday 31 January 1998. The course was dry, hard and technical. Weather conditions were sunny, but freezing (-2 °C). Mario De Clercq got an early lead and managed to widen it lap by lap. Meanwhile in the background his fellow countryman Erwin Vervecken was controlling the chasing group with ease, sacrificing personal gain for the nation. Parrying every attack, Vervecken managed to play out his own cards in the final climb and raced to a silver medal. Middelfart
Middelfart is a town in central Denmark, with a population of 16,277 . The town is the municipal seat of Middelfart Municipality on the island of Funen ( da, Fyn). Etymology The name Middelfart, first recorded as "Mæthælfar" in Valdemar's Census Book in 1231, consists of the old Danish word ''mæthal'' meaning 'middle' and ''far'' meaning 'way'. This name originally referred to the strait ''Snævringen'' ('the narrowing'), which is the narrowest part of the Little Belt, and was subsequently applied to the settlement as well. Beat Wabel (born 23 May 1967) is a Swiss former professional cyclist. He competed in the men's cross-country mountain biking event at the 1996 Summer Olympics. Professional from 1991 to 2005, he won the UCI Junior Cyclo-cross World Championships in 1985 and the Swiss National Cyclo-cross Championships five times. He also won a bronze medal in the elite race at the 1995 UCI World Championships. He is the brother of Yvonne Schnorf-Wabel. Richard Groenendaal
Richard Marinus Anthonius Groenendaal (born 13 July 1971) is a Dutch former professional cyclo-cross cyclist. Groenendaal won the UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships in 2000 and the overall titles in the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup 1997–1998, 2000–2001 and 2003–2004 and in the Cyclo-cross Superprestige in 1997–1998 and 2000–2001. Early career Groenendaal's father Reinier was an Elite cyclo-cross cyclist and was Dutch Elite champion in 1985. Groenendaal began to ride as a junior in 1987. He was Dutch Junior champion in 1987–1988 and 1988–89 where he also won the Junior World Cyclo-Cross championships. The following season he joined the Amateur category which he stayed until the 1993–94 season when he turned professional.
