1998 Tennessee Oilers Season
The 1998 Tennessee Oilers season was the franchise's 39th season overall, 29th with the National Football League (NFL), and their final season as the Oilers; they would be renamed the Titans the following year. The team matched their previous season's output of 8–8, marking their third straight season with exactly eight wins. The Oilers failed to qualify for the playoffs for the fifth consecutive year. The 1998 season was the only year the Oilers would play in Vanderbilt Stadium, an undersized stadium that was used as a temporary stopgap until the team's new permanent stadium could be constructed. The Oilers, who had originally intended to stay in Houston until the stadium was finished, were 'forced out' of Houston due to poor attendance in 1996, and were again forced out of their "Plan B," Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis, after attendance was even worse there in 1997. AFC Central
The American Football Conference – Northern Division or AFC North is one of the four divisions of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). The division was adopted after the restructuring of the 2002 NFL season, when the league realigned divisions after expanding to 32 teams. This is the only division in the NFL in which no member team has hosted a Super Bowl in their stadiums. Kevin Tyree Dyson (born June 23, 1975) is a former American football wide receiver of the National Football League. He was drafted by the Tennessee Oilers 16th overall in the 1998 NFL Draft. He played college football at Utah. Dyson is best known for his part in two historic NFL plays – the Music City Miracle and The Tackle. Kevin Dyson and his brother Andre Dyson were the first brothers in NFL history to score touchdowns in the same game. In gridiron football, a guard (G), otherwise known as an offensive guard (OG), is a player who lines up between the center (American football), center and the offensive tackle, tackles on the offensive line of a football team on the line of scrimmage used primarily for Blocking (American football), blocking. Benjamin Dempsey Olson (born June 5, 1975) is an American former college and professional American football player who was a guard in the National Football League (NFL) for ten seasons. He played college football for the University of Washington and earned All-American honors. He was drafted by the NFL's Tennessee Oilers in the fifth round of the 1998 NFL Draft and played his entire 10-year career with the Tennessee organization. A defensive tackle (DT) is a position in American football that will typically line up on the line of scrimmage, opposite one of the offensive guards, however he may also line up opposite one of the tackles. Defensive tackles are typically the largest and strongest of the defensive players. Depending on a team's individual defensive scheme, a defensive tackle may be called upon to fill several different roles. These roles may include merely holding the point of attack by refusing to be moved, or penetrating a certain gap between offensive linemen to break up a play in the opponent's backfield. Joe Fagaofe Salave'a (; born March 23, 1975) is an American football coach and former defensive tackle who is currently the associate head coach, run game coordinator and defensive line coach at the University of Miami. He previously served as the associate head coach, defensive line coach and co-defensive coordinator at the University of Oregon from 2017 to 2021. Salave'a played college football at the University of Arizona and was drafted by the Tennessee Oilers in the fourth round of the 1998 NFL Draft.
