The 1998 Queen's Birthday Honours for Australia were announced on Monday 8 June 1998 by the office of the Governor-General. Air Marshal Errol John McCormack AO (born 30 August 1941) is a retired senior commander in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), who served as Chief of Air Force from May 1998 to June 2001. Early life McCormack was born in Bundaberg, Queensland, on 30 August 1941 to Horace McCormack and his wife Ida (née Wooldridge). He was educated at Bundaberg State High School. George Seddon (23 April 1927 – 9 May 2007) was an Australian academic who held university chairs in a range of subjects. He wrote popular books on the Australian landscape embracing diverse points of view. He was well known for his book ''Sense of Place'' (1972) which brought the needs of the fragile Swan Coastal Plain to the attention of the public. Phillip Elliott Playford (27 November 1931 – 12 July 2017) was an Australian geologist who made important contributions to sedimentary geology, oil exploration in Western Australia and maritime history. He has made contributions to the recording of aboriginal art and culture from the north of Western Australia. John Minson
John Minson AM (6 June 1927 – March 10, 2017) was an Australian radio personality born in Sydney, but moved to Tamworth in 1961 to work as an announcer/copywriter at 2TM and briefly at sister station 2MO in Gunnedah. Career The country music program John hosted was one of a number born out of the need for changes designed to meet the challenge of television which commenced in Tamworth on April 10, 1965 and took away most of the station’s night-time (then prime time) advertising revenue. The legend of “Mr Hoedown” was born in 1967 when John Minson changed the name of his Radio 2TM country music program to “Hoedown”. Joseph Lo Bianco AM (born 7 July 1953) is Professor of Language and Literacy Education at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education, University of Melbourne, and serves as Past President of the Australian Academy of the Humanities (the first educator elected to this role). From 2011–2017 he designed, led and implemented a 6-year, 3-country language and peace building initiative for UNICEF in Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand. Wallace King (businessman)
Wallace Macarthur King AO was the chief executive officer of Leighton Holdings, Australia's largest engineering and construction company. He was CEO from 1987 until he was replaced on 1 February 2011 by David Stewart, making him one of the longest-running CEOs in Australian history. Wallace King is an alumnus of the University of New South Wales, graduating with both a Bachelor of Engineering and a Master of Engineering Science. Eric Gross Member of the Order of Australia, AM (16 September 192617 April 2011) was an Austrian-Australian piano, pianist, composer and teacher. Biography Gross was born in Vienna and emigrated to England in 1938. From the age of fourteen, he worked as a pianist in bands and orchestras. He studied at Trinity College of Music, with Wilfrid Dunwell (piano), and the University of Aberdeen, with (amongst others) Reginald Barrett-Ayres, and where he received an MA in 1957 (; ). Anne Fairbairn
Anne Mary Ross Fairbairn (also Body, ; 1928 – 22 October 2018) was a widely published Australian poet, journalist and expert in Arab culture. She is the only granddaughter of Australia's fourth Prime Minister, George Reid. In 1965, she married Geoffrey Forrester Fairbairn, a Professor in the Department of History at the Australian National University. Geoffrey died in London of lung cancer on 11 September 1980. Michael Bernard Easson AM (born 22 March 1955 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia), is an Australian businessman and former trade union leader. Lorraine Crapp
Lorraine Joyce Thurlow, (born 1 October 1938), née Crapp, is a former Olympic swimming champion representing Australia. In world swimming history, Crapp earned a place as the first woman to break the five-minute barrier in the 400 m freestyle. Born in 1938, as a young girl Crapp lived with her parents at Jervis Bay where her father was with a Royal Australian Air Force Air Sea Rescue Unit. By the age of five she was a competent swimmer. When the family moved to Mortlake she joined the Cabarita Swimming Club and by the age of 12 was the winner of all her age events in freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke.
