1998 International Sports Racing Series Season
The 1998 International Sports Racing Series was the second season of International Sportscar Racing Series (later known as the FIA Sportscar Championship). It was a series for sportscar-style prototypes broken into two classes based on power and weight, called SR1 and SR2, as well as a class of hillclimb-style sportscars, called CN. It began on April 13, 1998, and ended December 6, 1998, after 8 races. Schedule Season results Teams Championship Points are awarded to the top 10 finishers in the order of 20-15-12-10-8-6-4-3-2-1. Only the highest placing car within a team earned points towards the championship. The SportsRacing World Cup was available to all teams that participated, but separate SR2 and CN championships were also held. International Sportscar Racing Series
The FIA Sportscar Championship was a sports car racing series created by John Mangoletsi and was eventually taken control of by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). It was a series similar to the FIA GT Championship, concentrating on two classes of open-cockpit sports prototypes in endurance races mostly around Europe. The series was folded after the 2003 season. History Following the demise of the World Sportscar Championship in 1992, Europe was left without a major sportscar series. In the United States however, attempts were underway to recreate the glory of the World Sportscar Championship with the IMSA GTP series returning to cheaper, open-cockpit sportscars to replace their highly technological and expensive closed-cockpit sportscars that were similar to those used in the World Sportscar Championship at its end. Kyalami 9 Hours
The Nine Hours of Kyalami is an endurance sports car race contested at Kyalami, Midrand, South Africa. The first races were held from 1958 to 1960 at a circuit at the Grand Central Airport near Midrand before moving to Kyalami in 1961. The event was a mainstay until the late 1980s, including hosting three rounds of the World Sportscar Championship, however was only held three times between 1989 and 2018. The event was revived in 2019 as part of the 2019 Intercontinental GT Challenge. History From 1965 to 1973, the race was the centerpiece of the South African Springbok Trophy Series. Robin Donovan (born 19 December 1955 in Rustington, West Sussex) is a British former racing driver. He is best known for competing in 14 editions of the Le Mans 24 hours race; his best result there being 6th overall, 3rd in class (LMP1) and 1st privateer home driving with 5 x Le Mans winner Derek Bell MBE and Daytona 24 hours winner Jurgen Lassig in 1994 with the Gulf Racing entered and sponsored Kremer Porsche K8. Fulvio Ballabio (born 8 October 1954) is a race car driver born in Milan, Italy. He raced in Formula Two in 1983, in Formula 3000 in 1986 and 6 starts in CART from 1987 to 1989 for Dick Simon Racing and Dale Coyne Racing. More recently he drove in two races of the 2004 Formula X Sport Series. In 1983 he started the Monte Carlo Automobile car manufacturer. In 1989, he designed the "Montecarlo GTB Centenaire", a SuperCar, built of carbon fiber, the idea came from Lamborghini Countach Evoluzione (first car in the world made in carbon fiber completed in 1986). Arturo Francesco "Art" Merzario (born 11 March 1943 in Civenna, Como) (erroneously registered as Arturio on his birth certificate) is a racing driver from Italy. He participated in 85 Formula One World Championship Grands Prix, debuting at the 1972 British Grand Prix. He scored 11 championship points. Racing career Merzario began his career as a test driver with works Fiat Abarths, subsequently participating to GT racing and European mountain-climb events. Didier Theys (born 19 October 1956) is a Belgian sports car driver. He is a two-time overall winner of the 24 Hours of Daytona (1998 and 2002); a winner of the 12 Hours of Sebring (1998); the Sports Racing Prototype driver champion of the Grand-American Road Racing Association (2002) and the winner of the 24 Hours of Spa (1987 in a factory BMW). He was also the polesitter (1996) and a podium finisher at the 24 Hours of Le Mans (1997, 1998 and 1999). Fredy Lienhard, Sr. (born 14 September 1947 in Herisau) is a Swiss racing driver. In 1968 Lienhard founded Lista Racing and throughout the 1970s and 1980s he competed in Formula Vee and Formula Two. In 1993 and 1994 he moved to sports car racing competing in a Lola Can-Am car in Interserie division 2. In 1995 he acquired a Ferrari 333 SP and began racing in the European Sportscar Championship and IMSA GT Championship with teammate Didier Theys, winning the 24 Hours of Zolder in 1997. He moved to the American Le Mans Series in 1999. Centenari Racing SRL, usually referred to as Centenari, was an Italian racing team and chassis constructor company based in Italy, predominantly building sports prototypes. The team were active in international events between 1997 and 2006, having started off in national events in 1991. Racing history Early history In 1991, Centenari built the M1, and entered Federico D'Amore in several Italian Prototype Championship events that year. The best result of the season was a third-placed finish at Enna-Pergusa. For 1992, D'Amore left the team, and Stefano Speranza was entered at Monza, but failed to finish.
