1998 IIHF World Championship
The 1998 IIHF World Championship was held in Switzerland from 1–17 May 1998. The format expanded to 16 teams for the first time. The teams were divided into four groups of four with the top two teams in each advancing to the next round. The two groups of four then played a round robin with the top two teams in each moving on to the semi-finals. The semi-finals were a two-game total goals for series as was the final. Venues Qualifying Round (Austria) Played 6–9 November 1997 in Klagenfurt. The Kazakhs, Austrians, and Norwegians finished virtually even. In head-to-head match-ups they each had one win and one loss, they each had scored as many as they had allowed. The Kazakhs scored six goals, the other two both five, pushing them to first. The Norwegians had beaten Poland by three, on the final day the Austrians pushed their advantage over Poland to four, giving them the final spot in the World Championship. Jonas Bergqvist
Jonas Pär Bergqvist (born 26 September 1962) is a Swedish former professional ice hockey right winger, who twice won an Olympic medal in his career. Playing career Bergqvist played for Rögle BK and Leksands IF between 1981 and 1989. He played 22 games in the National Hockey League, NHL for the Calgary Flames in 1989–90. He then played in Germany for Mannheimer ERC before returning to Leksands IF in 1991, where he played until 1998. He won the Golden Puck as the top player in Sweden in 1995–96. In 1998–99 he played for VEU Feldkirch in Austria, winning the Alpine championship. Bergqvist held the record for games played – 272 – for the Swedish national team, prior to his record being broken by Jörgen Jönsson in 2007. Vesa Toskala
Vesa Tapani Toskala (born May 20, 1977) is a Finnish former professional ice hockey goaltender. After initially playing for his hometown team Ilves of the SM-liiga, Toskala played the majority of his professional career in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the San Jose Sharks, Toronto Maple Leafs and Calgary Flames. Early career Toskala was selected by San Jose in the fourth round, 90th overall, in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft. Toskala turned heads with his stellar play in the 1998–99 season with Ilves of the Finnish SM-liiga, where he went 21–12–0 with a 2.14 goals against average, a 0.916 save percentage and five shutouts. Jarmo Myllys
Jarmo Pentti Kalevi Myllys (born 29 May 1965) is a Finnish people, Finnish former professional ice hockey goaltender. He was drafted by the Minnesota North Stars as their ninth-round pick, #172 overall, in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft. He is currently the goalkeeping coach for Austrian hockey team EC KAC of the Austrian Hockey League, EBEL. His jersey number, #35, was retired in Luleå in 2011. Playing career Early career Myllys was born in Savonlinna, and started playing ice hockey for the local team Savonlinnan Pallokerho or SaPKo. He played his first adult season (1982–1983) in SaPko, but moved to Tampere for SM-Liiga games in Ilves. Myllys spent a total of three seasons (1983–1986) with Ilves, then moved to Rauma, Finland, Rauman Lukko where he stayed for two seasons (1986–1988) before moving to the National Hockey League, NHL. Ari Sulander
Ari Juhani Sulander (born 6 January 1969), nicknamed Sulo, is a retired Swiss-Finnish professional ice hockey goaltender. Career in Finland Sulander played nine seasons for Jokerit Helsinki in Finland's SM-liiga, winning four league championships (1992, 1994, 1996, 1997). He also won one Silver (1995), one Bronze (1998), two European Championships (1995 and 1996) and one European Championship Bronze (93). Sulander began with Jokerit as a Junior and progressed through the team all the way to position of No. 1 goaltender. During his Jokerit career, he played with SM-liiga stars such as Otakar Janecký, Teemu Selänne, Waltteri Immonen, and Jari Kurri, who played for Jokerit during the 1994–95 NHL lockout. Kent Forsberg
Kent Forsberg (born 12 September 1947) is a Swedish ice hockey coach. He has coached Modo Hockey of the Swedish Hockey League, Elitserien and, between 1995–1998, the Sweden men's national ice hockey team, Swedish national team. He is the father of former NHL player Peter Forsberg. Coaching career Forsberg began coaching Modo Hockey of the Elitserien in 1992–93, leading them to a 17-17-6 record. After a sub-.500 season in 1993–94, his coaching tenure ended. During his two seasons with Modo, he coached his son Peter Forsberg who was starring for the club. He took over as head coach of the Swedish national team in 1995 after Curt Lundmark. After the World Championships in 1998, he resigned. Forsberg then briefly served as a mid-season replacement as head coach of the Eisbären Berlin of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga. Off the ice Forsberg and his son have a joint venture called Forspro. Niklas Sundström
Lars Niklas Sundström (born June 6, 1975) is a Swedish former professional ice hockey player who started his professional career in Modo Hockey. He was drafted eighth overall in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Rangers. He was also on Wayne Gretzky's line. He was not known for his goal scoring ability, but for his defensive play. He was traded to the San Jose Sharks in 1999, and to the Montreal Canadiens in 2003. Sundström plays forward and specializes in defensive roles. When he was a junior player he formed a line in Modo with future NHL stars Peter Forsberg and Markus Näslund. He wore the number 24 for the San Jose Sharks and the New York Rangers but wore the number 37 for the Montreal Canadiens. Fredrik Modin
Jan Fredrik "Freddy" Modin (born 8 October 1974) is a Swedish former professional ice hockey left winger who played 14 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) and most notably won the Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2003–04 season. Playing career Modin played his youth league games for thNjurunda Sports Club like Henrik Zetterberg. In 2008, the club renamed their arena—until then known as Njurunda Ishall—to Modin & Zetterberg-hallen. Modin was drafted 64th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. Jörgen Jönsson
Ulf Peter Jörgen Jönsson (born 29 September 1972) is a Swedish former professional ice hockey player who last played for Färjestads BK of the Sweden, Swedish Swedish Hockey League, Elitserien. He has represented the Team Sweden 285 times, making him the record holder for most games played in the national team. Jörgen Jönsson is also the older brother of former NHL-star Kenny Jönsson, and the two played 68 games in North America together as teammates. Patric Göran Kjellberg (born June 17, 1969) is a Swedish former professional ice hockey Winger (ice hockey), left wing. He was drafted in the fourth round, 83rd overall, by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft. Hans Peter Nordström (born July 26, 1974, in Munkfors, Sweden) is a Swedish former professional ice hockey player. He played his last seasons for Leksands IF. He also played two games for the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League during the 1998–99 NHL season, 1998–99 season.
