1998 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships
The 1998 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships were held in Szeged, Hungary. The men's competition consisted of nine Canadian Canadians (french: Canadiens) are people identified with the country of Canada. This connection may be residential, legal, historical or cultural. Tomáš Křivánek
Tomáš Křivánek (born January 10, 1966) is a Czechoslovak-Czech sprint canoeist who competed from the late 1980s to the late 1990s. He won five medals at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships with a gold (C-4 200 m: 1998), a silver (C-4 200 m: 1995) and three bronzes (C-4 200 m: 1994, 1997; C-4 500 m: 1993). Petr Procházka
Petr Procházka (born March 26, 1964 in Hradec Králové) is a Czechoslovak-Czech sprint canoeist who competed from 1982 to 2006. World junior champion in Belgrade in 1982, Procházka missed the 1984 Olympics because of the Eastern Bloc's boycott but went on to win two medals at the 1987 senior World Championships in Duisburg, West Germany. In the individual C-1 500 m he was the silver medallist. He also won a bronze medal in the C-2 500 m with partner Alan Lohniský. At the 1988 Summer Olympics however he came a disappointing eighth in the C-1 500 m and ninth in the C-2 500 m. Ten years later, at an age when most canoeists are contemplating retirement, Procházka was embarking on a remarkable run of victories as a member of the Czech four-man C-4 200 m crew. György Zala (canoeist)
György Zala (born January 19, 1969 in Budapest) is a Hungarian sprint canoeist who competed from 1989 to 2001. Competing in three Summer Olympics, he won two bronze medals in the C-1 1000 m event, earning them in 1992 and 1996. Zala, a hyperactive child, took up canoeing at the age of 11. A great natural athlete despite suffering from asthma, it seemed he was only truly motivated by the Olympics. Between Olympiads he tended to fall out of sight, focussing instead on his other passions such as extreme sports. It was not until later in his career that he won any world or European championship titles. He took to his new role as the "old man" of the Hungarian four-man crew with enthusiasm, helping his younger teammates to victory in the C-4 1000 m event at the 2000 European Championships in Poznań. Florin Popescu
Florin Popescu (born 30 August 1974 in Iancu Jianu, Olt) is a Romanian sprint canoer who competed from the mid-1990s to 2005. Competing in two Summer Olympics, he won two Olympic medals at Sydney in 2000 with teammate Mitică Pricop (gold: C-2 1000 m, bronze: C-2 500 m). He won a total of seven world championship gold medals (and nineteen total) as well as seven European championship golds, making him the most successful Romanian paddler of modern times. Injury forced Popescu to retire at the end of the 2005 season after winning his seventh world title (C-4 500 m) at the World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia. Aleksandr Viktorovich Kostoglod (russian: Александр Викторович Костоглод, born 31 May 1974) is a Soviet-born, Russian sprint canoeist who has competed since the early 1990s. Competing in four Summer Olympics, he won three medals with two silvers (2004: C-2 1000 m, 2008: C-2 500 m) and one bronze (2004: C-2 500 m). Kostoglod is a six-time world champion gold medallist in the Canadian canoe (C) events. Kostoglod did not take up canoeing until the age of fourteen, at the suggestion of family friend and double world champion Vladimir Ladosha. Paweł Baraszkiewicz
Paweł Baraszkiewicz (born May 20, 1977, in Działdowo) is a Polish sprint canoeist who has competed since the mid-1990s. He has been world champion four times in the Canadian canoe C-2 event with partner Daniel Jędraszko. Baraszkiewicz debuted at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, but was eliminated in the first semifinal of the C-2 500 m event. They also won a silver medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney in the C-2 500 m event. That same year Baraskiewicz also won two C-2 gold medals at the European championships (in the 500 m with Jedrasko and also in the 1000 m with Michał Gajownik). Daniel Jędraszko
Daniel Jędraszko (born April 6, 1976 in Szczecin) is a Polish sprint canoeist who has competed since the late 1990s. He has been world champion four times in the Canadian canoe C-2 event with partner Paweł Baraszkiewicz. They also won a C-2 500 m silver medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. The same year Jędraszko won his only European title to date (again in the C-2 500 m). However at the 2004 Athens games they underperformed and came away without a medal. Injuries prevented him from competing in 2005 but in 2006 he formed a new C-2 partnership with Roman Rynkiewicz. They finished fifth at the world championships in Szeged, Hungary.
