The discus throw (), also known as disc throw, is a track and field event in which an athlete throws a heavy disk (mathematics), disc—called a discus—in an attempt to mark a farther distance than their competitors. It is an classical antiquity, ancient sport, as demonstrated by the fifth-century-BC Myron statue ''Discobolus''. Although not part of the current pentathlon, it was one of the events of the Ancient Olympic pentathlon, ancient Greek pentathlon, which can be dated back to at least 708 BC, and it is part of the modern decathlon. Timo Tompuri
Timo Antero Tompuri (born June 9, 1969 in Pernå, Finland) is a Finnish discus, discus thrower, who throws for the team Yleisurheilu-Team Sahalahti. Although he was coached by Kari Mattila until 2004, he currently coaches himself. Standing 187 cm tall and weighing in at 120 kg, he is a five-time Finnish champion in discus. Tompuri started competing in athletics later than most, at the age of 26. He threw the discus more than 60 m for the first time in 1997 and won his first Finnish Championships in Athletics, Finnish Championship in the summer of 1998. Tompuri has also won the Finnish Championships in Athletics, Finnish Championships in 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2005; placed second in 1999, 2002 and 2004; and placed third in 2006. Andrzej Krawczyk
Andrzej Krawczyk (born 11 April 1976, in Płońsk) is a retired Polish discus thrower. His personal best throw is 65.56 metres, achieved in July 2005 in Norrtälje. Career He started out in the shot put and was the bronze medallist at the European Youth Olympic Festival in 1993. He just missed out on a discus medal at the 1994 World Junior Championships in Athletics, placing fourth, but he topped the podium at the 1995 European Athletics Junior Championships the following year. He followed this up with a gold medal at the 1997 European Athletics U23 Championships. Dmitriy Igorievich Shevchenko (russian: Дмитрий Игоревич Шевченко; born May 13, 1968, in Taganrog) is a Russian discus thrower who won silver medals at the World and European Championships. Despite this he did not throw past the 70 metres mark until 2002, when he achieved his personal best throw of 70.54 metres in Krasnodar. Ercüment Olgundeniz (born July 7, 1976 in Izmir) is a Turkish track and field athlete competing in the discus and occasionally shot put. The tall athlete at is a member of Enkaspor, where he is coached by Teodoru Agachi. He took part at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. With his throw of 58.17 m, Olgundeniz ranked 28th and could not qualify for the finals.
