The 1997–98 season was the List of Walsall F.C. seasons, 99th completed season in the history of Walsall F.C., Walsall Football Club, the clubs 78th season in the English Football League, Football League and third consecutive season in the Football League Second Division. In addition to the league, Walsall also participated in the 1997–98 FA Cup, FA Cup, 1997–98 Football League Cup, League Cup and 1997–98 Football League Trophy, Football League Trophy. Season summary ''The Saddlers'' finished in the top half of the Second Division in the previous two seasons under Chris Nicholl's management, however, he quit in May 1997 citing family reasons. Walsall (, or ; locally ) is a market town and administrative centre in the West Midlands County, England. Historically part of Staffordshire, it is located north-west of Birmingham, east of Wolverhampton and from Lichfield. Walsall is the administrative centre of the wider Metropolitan Borough of Walsall. It was transferred from Staffordshire to the newly created West Midlands County in 1974. At the 2011 census, the town's built-up area had a population of 67,594, with the wider borough having a population of 269,323.
