1997–98 WHL Season
The 1997–98 WHL season was the 32nd season for the Western Hockey League (WHL). Eighteen teams completed a 72-game season. The Portland Winter Hawks won the President's Cup before going on to win the 1998 Memorial Cup. Western Hockey League
The Western Hockey League (WHL) is a major junior ice hockey league based in Western Canada and the Northwestern United States. The WHL is one of three leagues that constitutes the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) as the highest level of junior hockey in Canada. Teams play for the Ed Chynoweth Cup, with the winner moving on to play for the Memorial Cup, Canada's national junior championship. WHL teams have won the Memorial Cup 19 times since the league became eligible to compete for the trophy. Many players have been drafted from WHL teams, and have found success at various levels of professional hockey, including the National Hockey League (NHL). The league was founded in 1966, as the Canadian Major Junior Hockey League (CMJHL), with seven western Canadian teams in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Prince George Cougars
The Prince George Cougars are a Canada, Canadian junior ice hockey#Major junior, major junior ice hockey team currently members of the B.C. Division of the Western Conference in the Western Hockey League (WHL). The team is based in Prince George, British Columbia, Prince George, British Columbia, and plays its home games at the CN Centre, formally known as the Prince George Multiplex. The Cougars were founded in 1971 as the Victoria Cougars (WHL), Victoria Cougars, but later moved to Prince George in 1994, becoming the northernmost franchise in the Canadian Hockey League. Brad Moran (hockey)
Brad Moran (born March 20, 1979) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey centre, his last team being the Nottingham Panthers of the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL). Playing career A graduate of the Western Hockey League (WHL)'s Calgary Hitmen, Moran, who was originally drafted in the 7th round, 191st overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, spent five seasons with the Hitmen before signing as a free agent with the Columbus Blue Jackets in the summer of 2000. As a prolific scorer with the Hitmen, he recorded 532 regular season and playoff points over his five-year WHL career, earning WHL Player of the Year honours and capturing the Bob Clarke Trophy as the league's top scorer in 1999–2000 while being named to the WHL Eastern Conference First All-Star Team. Mark Christopher Smith (born October 24, 1977) is a Canadians, Canadian former professional ice hockey Centre (ice hockey), centre who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the San Jose Sharks and Calgary Flames. Shane Willis (born June 13, 1977) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey Winger (ice hockey), right winger. Willis was born in Edmonton, Alberta, but grew up in Sylvan Lake, Alberta. Career Willis was originally drafted by Tampa Bay Lightning, Tampa Bay 56th overall in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft, but unable to come to terms, he re-entered the draft and was selected 88th overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. Ronald Petrovický
Ronald Petrovický (born February 15, 1977) is a Slovak former ice hockey right winger. He played professionally in Europe and in North America in the National Hockey League (NHL) as well as international play for the Slovak national ice hockey team. Playing career As a youth, Petrovický played in the 1991 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a team from Poprad. Petrovicky moved to Canada to play junior hockey with the Tri-City Americans, Prince George Cougars and the Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League (WHL). Cory Cyrenne
Cory Cyrenne (born August 25, 1977) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. He was named the Canadian Junior A Hockey Player of the Year in 1995 and received a hockey scholarship to Colorado College. He was also named the CHL's Sportsmanlike player of the year in 1998. Cyrenne played junior hockey with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the WHL. He was drafted 191st overall by the San Jose Sharks in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. He attended the Sharks 1997 training camp, but was returned to Brandon, where he was the league's second-leading scorer in 1997–98. Cyrenne played professionally in several leagues, including the IHL and AHL. Serhiy Volodymyrovych Varlamov ( uk, Сергі́й Володи́мирович Варла́мов; born July 21, 1978) is a Ukrainian former professional ice hockey player. He played for the Calgary Flames and St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Tri-City Americans are a major junior ice hockey team of the Western Hockey League, based in Kennewick, Washington. The team plays its home games at Toyota Center (Kennewick), Toyota Center.
