1997–98 Glasgow Warriors Season
The 1997–98 season is the second in the history of the Glasgow Warriors as a professional side. During this season the young professional side competed as Glasgow Rugby. This season saw Glasgow Rugby compete in the competitions: the Scottish Inter-District Championship and the European Champions Cup, the Heineken Cup. Season Overview Disquiet grows Notwithstanding the 'Gang of Four' pressing for the club teams to be used in Europe instead of the district teams, further disquiet was building against Kevin Greene's dual role as Glasgow Hawks coach and Glasgow Warriors coach. The matter was brought to a head when Greene signed Tommy Hayes for the Glasgow side and Kilmarnock RFC complained that they had not been given an opportunity to bid for the player; as one club team in the district would be assigned the player when not in use by the professional Glasgow side. Glasgow Warriors
Glasgow Warriors are a professional rugby union side from Scotland. The team plays in the United Rugby Championship league and in the European Professional Club Rugby tournaments. In the 2014–15 season they won the Pro12 title and became the first Scottish team to win a major trophy in rugby union's professional era. The side is known for its fast, dynamic and attacking style of play, using offloads and quick rucks. Defensively the club prides itself on its 'Fortress Scotstoun' where the club play at home. Glasgow Hawks
Glasgow Hawks is an amateur rugby union team in Glasgow, Scotland. They were Premiership Division One champions for three consecutive seasons from 2003–04 to 2005–06. History In Paris on 27 August 1995 a meeting of the International Rugby Board declared that professionalism was to be allowed in rugby. At that time there were differing views as to whether districts or Premier clubs in Scotland would become professional. Several Glasgow players decided to move to other teams. During season 1996–97 Brian Simmers decided to look into a merger of Glasgow Academicals (GAC) and Glasgow High Kelvinside (GHK). Alan Perrie
Alan Perrie (born 27 May 1963 in Larkhall, Scotland), is a Scottish former rugby union player for Glasgow Warriors at the Loosehead Prop position. Rugby Union career Amateur career Perrie started playing amateur rugby with Dalziel Rugby Club from 1980 to 1991. He had 155 appearances for the club scoring 20 tries and 80 points. In season 1987–88 Dalziel won the Glasgow Cup for the first time with Perrie played scoring a try in the final against Clarkston. The result: Dalziel 18 Clarkston 7. He then moved to Glasgow Academicals. On Accies merger with Glasgow High Kelvinside to form Glasgow Hawks in 1997 Perrie then played for the Hawks. A bust-up in the Hawks match against Edinburgh Academicals saw Perrie punch Edinburgh Academicals Centre Craig Murray. Alan Kittle
Alan Kittle (born 10 December 1970 in Scotland) is a Scottish former rugby union player for Glasgow Warriors. He played at the Loosehead Prop position. Rugby Union career Kittle played rugby both in the amateur and professional era. Amateur career He played with amateur club Stewarts Melville in 1993 to 1995. He joined Watsonians in the 1995–96 season. In 1999 and 2000, Alan played for Musselburgh RFC. Professional career When rugby's professional era began in Scotland in 1996, Kittle signed for Edinburgh. As part of the Edinburgh deal Kittle could still play for Watsonians. David Jamieson (rugby Union)
David Jamieson (born in Scotland) is a Scottish former rugby union player who played for Glasgow Warriors at the tighthead prop position, although he can also play hooker. Rugby Union career Amateur career Jamieson's rugby career spanned the amateur and professional era. In 1995 before professionalism was introduced in Scotland – Scotland would take up professional rugby a year later for the 1996–97 season – he was playing for West of Scotland. He subsequently signed for the Glasgow Warriors. Whilst not involved with the professional provincial Glasgow side in the 1997–98 season, Jamieson played amateur rugby with Stirling County. In 2000, he was back at West of Scotland and played at the opening of West's new stand at Burnbrae. Mike Beckham
Mike Beckham (born 22 May 1970, in Auckland, New Zealand) is a Cook Islands former international rugby union player for Glasgow Warriors at the Loosehead Prop position. He was signed by Kevin Greene, the Glasgow coach, in 1997. Previously the time Beckham had a 9 to 5 job and was playing rugby for the New Zealand Army team. He was capped internationally by the Cook Islands. He said of the move: "I came here to get a taste of European rugby. The opportunity came through Kevin Greene. Chris Docherty
Chris Docherty (born 14 November 1976 in Scotland) is a Scottish former rugby union player who played for Glasgow Warriors at the Hooker position. He played once in the Heineken Cup for Glasgow, in the season 1997-98 against Leicester Tigers, coming off the bench. Glasgow lost the match 90 - 19 in the Quarter Final play-off. He was announced in Glasgow's Heineken Cup squad of 2001 - 02. The Hooker started out his amateur career with Glasgow High Kelvinside. Gordon Macpherson
Gordon Macpherson (born 9 October 1962) is a former New Zealand rugby union player. A lock, Macpherson represented Poverty Bay and Otago at a provincial level. He played a single match for the New Zealand national side, the All Blacks, a test against France in 1986. He moved from Otago in 1993 to Scotland where he was player-coach for West of Scotland. West of Scotland is an amateur rugby club based in Milngavie, near Glasgow. He was to marry a Scot and settle in Scotland. He became a forwards coach in Scotland. Highlanders (rugby Union)
The Highlanders (formerly the Otago Highlanders) is a New Zealand professional rugby union team based in Dunedin that compete in Super Rugby. The team was formed in 1996 to represent the lower South Island in the newly formed Super 12 competition, and includes the Otago, North Otago and Southland unions. The Highlanders take their name from the Scottish immigrants that helped found the Otago, North Otago, and Southland regions in the 1840s and 1850s. Their main ground through the 2011 Super Rugby season was Carisbrook in Dunedin, with home games occasionally being played in Invercargill and Queenstown. Jim Telfer
James Telfer (born 17 March 1940) is a Scottish former rugby union coach and player. As a player, he won 21 international caps in the amateur era, also having a career as a headmaster at Hawick High School and Galashiels Academy and Forrester High School as a chemistry teacher. With Sir Ian McGeechan he had success with both the Scotland national team and the British Lions. Playing career Telfer played for Melrose RFC and was still a student when he was first selected for international duties. He later worked as a chemistry teacher. His first cap came against France at Murrayfield on 4 January 1964. His last match for Scotland was on 28 February 1970 at Lansdowne Road against Ireland.
