The Premier of the Cabinet () is the head of government of North Korea and a key adviser to the Supreme Leader of North Korea. The office is also alternatively known as Prime Minister of North Korea. The prime minister of North Korea is the head of government of North Korea, and appointment requires approval from the nation's parliament, the Supreme People's Assembly. The current premier is Kim Tok-hun, who is also a member of the Presidium of the Politburo of the Workers' Party of Korea. Kang Song-san
Kang Song-san (3 March 1931 – 22 February 1997) was a North Korean politician who served as Premier of North Korea from 1984 to 1986 and again from 1992 to 1997. He succeeded Ri Jong-ok in his first term and Yon Hyong-muk in his second term. He was born in North Hamgyong. He graduated from Mangyongdae Revolutionary School and from Kim Il-sung University and went to study in the Soviet Union in Moscow State University. He became an instructor in the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea in 1955. Candidate member of the political politburo in 1973, Deputy Prime Minister in 1977, the Sixth Party Congress in 1980 he was elected a member of the Politburo. Hong Song-nam
Hong Song-nam (2 October 1929 – 31 March 2009) was a North Korean politician who was the Premier of North Korea from 1998 to 2003. He succeeded Kang Song-san. Born in Kangwon Province, he graduated from the Kim Il-sung University and studied electrical engineering at the Prague Technical Institute. From 1954 he worked in the North Korean Ministry of Heavy Industry. In 1971–1973 he was Minister of Heavy Industry. From 1973–1975 he was Deputy Chairman of the Administrative Council of the DPRK. In 1973–1977 he was Chairman of the State Planning Commission. From 1982 to 1986 he was First Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea of South Pyongan Province. In 1987–1990 he served as Deputy Chairman of the Administrative Council, the chairman of the State Planning Commission of the DPRK. Supreme Leader Of North Korea
The supreme leader () of North Korea is the ''de facto'' paramount leader of the Workers' Party of Korea, the state and the Korean People's Army. The title has not been written into the national constitution as a separate office, but it currently states that the president of the State Affairs Commission is the supreme leader of North Korea. Likewise, according to the WPK Charter, the general secretary of the WPK is the supreme leader of the Workers' Party. Formerly, under Kim Jong-il, this title was bestowed on the office of Chairman of the National Defence Commission, who was also the WPK general secretary. The first leader of the state prior to the existence of North Korea was Terenty Shtykov who served as the head of the Soviet Civil Administration, the governing authority controlled by the Soviet Union that ruled the northern half of Korea from 1945 to 1948. Kim Jong-il (; ; ; born Yuri Irsenovich Kim;, 16 February 1941 – 17 December 2011) was a North Korean politician who was the second supreme leader of North Korea from 1994 to 2011. He led North Korea from the 1994 death of his father Kim Il-sung, the first Supreme Leader, until his own death in 2011, when he was succeeded by his son, Kim Jong-un. In the early 1980s, Kim had become the heir apparent for the leadership of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and assumed important posts in the party and army organs. North Korean Famine
The North Korean Famine (), also known as the Arduous March or the March of Suffering (), was a period of mass starvation together with a general economic crisis from 1994 to 1998 in North Korea. During this time there was an increase in defection from North Korea which peaked towards the end of the famine period. The famine stemmed from a variety of factors. Economic mismanagement and the loss of Soviet support caused food production and imports to decline rapidly. A series of floods and droughts exacerbated the crisis. The North Korean government and its centrally planned system proved too inflexible to effectively curtail the disaster. North Korea attempted to obtain aid and commercial opportunities, but failed to receive initial attention. Estimates of the death toll vary widely.
