1997 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships
The 1997 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships were held in Château-d'Œx, Switzerland from 18 to 21 September 1997. The disciplines included were cross-country and downhill. The event was the 8th edition of the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships and the first to be held in Switzerland. Château-d'Œx
Château-d'Œx () is a municipality in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland. It is in the district of Riviera-Pays-d'Enhaut. History Château-d'Œx is first mentioned in 1115 as ''Oit'', ''Oyz'', ''Oix'' and ''Oyez''. Prehistoric settlements During the late Paleolithic and Mesolithic (9500 BC to at least 6000 BC) caves around Château-d'Œx served as a seasonal settlement. Bronze Age knives indicate that there was a settlement during that era as well. Many of the local names (''combe'' = valley, ''joeur'' = forest, ''man''= rock) and the local dialect are the only traces of a Celtic settlement in the area. The lack of iron ore and the sparseness of the soil probably prevented the romanization of lowland valleys. During the Gallo-Roman era, the region may have been only sparsely populated. By the 10th century, the Alamannic settlements had only reached Le Vanel but then spread even higher and reached the pastures in L'Étivaz in the southern part of the municipality. The vall ... Helena Eriksson (cyclist)
Helena Eriksson (born 1962) is a Swedish poet. Her sixth collection of poetry, ''Strata'' (2004), was published in English in 2014. Biography Born in Nyköping, Eriksson was raised in the countryside. After graduating in philosophy and art at Gothenburg University, she worked as an editor for the cultural journal ''Ord & Bild''. She has also worked as a translator. In 1990, she completed her first lyrical collection, ''Byggnad åt mig'' (A Building for Me). Her dramatic expressionist poems, written in prose, evoke animal and human worlds which are also depicted in later works.
