1997 U.S. Women's Open
The 1997 U.S. Women's Open was the 52nd U.S. Women's Open, held July 10–13 at the Witch Hollow course of Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club near North Plains, Oregon, northwest of Portland. Alison Nicholas entered the final round with a three stroke lead and shot an even-par 71 to win her only major title, one stroke ahead of runner-up Nancy Lopez. In the final pairing, Lopez slid a downhill birdie putt past the 72nd hole while Nicholas sank a three-footer (0.9 m) for par to win at 274 (−10). Lopez, age 40 and in search of the title that eluded her, was the first-ever player to shoot four rounds in the 60s in the U.S. Women's Open. United States Amateur Championship (golf)
The United States Amateur Championship, commonly known as the U.S. Amateur, is the leading annual golf tournament in the United States for amateur golfers. It is organized by the United States Golf Association and is currently held each August over a 7-day period. In 1894 there were two tournaments called the "National Amateur Championship". One of them was played at Newport Country Club and was won by William G. Lawrence, and the other took place at Saint Andrew's Golf Club and was won by Laurence B. Stottard. This state of affairs prompted Charles B. Macdonald of the Chicago Golf Club to call for the creation of a national governing body to authorize an official national championship, and the Amateur Golf Association of the United States, which was soon to be renamed the United States Golf Association, was formed on December 22 of that year. Pearl Sinn
Ji Young "Pearl" Sinn-Bonanni (born July 17, 1967) is a Korean-American professional golfer who played on the LPGA, LPGA Tour. She played under her maiden name, Pearl Sinn until her marriage in 2002. Sinn was born in Seoul, South Korea. Her family moved to the United States when she was 9 and she became a U.S. citizen at age 14, renouncing her Korean citizenship. Sinn had a very successful amateur career. She played college golf at Arizona State University where she was a three-time All-American. She won the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links in 1988 and 1989 (after finishing runner-up in 1987) and the U.S. Women's Amateur in 1988. Rosie Jones (born November 13, 1959) is an American professional golfer, with 13 LPGA Tour career victories and nearly $8.4 million in tournament earnings. Amateur career Jones was born in Santa Ana, California. In her amateur career, she was a three time New Mexico Junior Champion (1974–76) and won the New Mexico State Championship in 1979. Jones attended Ohio State University where in 1981 she was an AIAW All-American. Jenny Chuasiriporn (born Wanalee Chuasiriporn; July 9, 1977) is a former American professional golfer who finished second at the 1998 U.S. Women's Open.
