1997 New Orleans Saints Season
The 1997 New Orleans Saints season was the franchise’s 31st season in the National Football League, and 24th at the Louisiana Superdome. The team improved upon its 1996 record of 3–13, winning six games, but failed to qualify for the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season. This was the Saints’ first season with Mike Ditka as head coach. New Orleans hired the former Chicago Bears head coach after Ditka had spent the previous four seasons as a studio analyst for NBC Sports. NFC West
The National Football Conference - Western Division or NFC West is one of the four Division (sport), divisions of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL). It currently has four members: the Arizona Cardinals, the Los Angeles Rams, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Seattle Seahawks. The division was formed in 1967 as the National Football League Coastal Division, keeping with the theme of having all of the league's divisions starting with the letter "C." The division was so named because its teams were fairly close to the coasts of the United States, although they were on opposite coasts, making for long travel between division rivals. Danny Wuerffel
Daniel Carl Wuerffel (born May 27, 1974) is a former college and professional American football quarterback. Wuerffel attended the University of Florida, where he was a prolific passer for the Florida Gators under head coach Steve Spurrier. Wuerffel led the NCAA in touchdown passes in 1995 and 1996 and set numerous school and conference records during his career. During his senior year in 1996, Wuerffel won the Heisman Trophy while leading the Gators to their first national championship. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2013. Rick Venturi
Rick Venturi (born February 23, 1946) is a former American football player, coach and current broadcaster. He served as the head coach at Northwestern University and as longtime National Football League assistant coach known for his defense. As the head coach at Northwestern from 1978 to 1980, Venturi compiled a record of 1-31-1. During his tenure as coach of the Northwestern Wildcats' NCAA Division I began a record 34-game losing streak. After leaving Northwestern, Venturi spent 12 years as an assistant with the Baltimore/Indianapolis Colts, eventually rising to defensive coordinator. Bruce Lemmerman (born October 4, 1945 in Los Angeles, California) is a former professional American football player. Football career After a star career at San Fernando Valley State College, where he led the Matadors to their first winning season and the Junior Rose Bowl in 1967, Lemmerman became a backup quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons in 1968 and 1969. He later played ten years in the Canadian Football League for the Edmonton Eskimos. Bill Kuharich is an American professional football executive, specializing in player-personnel (i.e., evaluating and selecting players); he has also held the General Manager position. Kuharich is the son of Joe Kuharich, former college and NFL head coach. The 1996 LSU Tigers football team represented Louisiana State University in the 1996 NCAA Division I-A football season. LSU finished with a 10–2 overall record (6–2 in SEC play) after defeating Clemson Tigers, 10–7, in the Peach Bowl. It was Gerry DiNardo's second season as head coach and the Tigers built upon the previous year's success with their first ten-win season and bowl win since 1987. The tight end is often a hybrid position with the characteristics and roles of both an offensive lineman and a wide receiver. Like offensive linemen, they are usually lined up on the offensive line and are large enough to be effective blockers. The 1996 Arizona State Sun Devils football team represented the Arizona State University in the 1996 NCAA Division I-A college football season. The team's head coach was Bruce Snyder, who was coaching his fifth season with the Sun Devils and 17th season overall. Home games were played at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona.
