1997 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship
The 1997 NCAA Division I lacrosse tournament was the 27th annual tournament hosted by the National Collegiate Athletic Association to determine the team champion of men's college lacrosse among its Division I programs, held at the end of the 1997 NCAA Division I men's lacrosse season. Princeton defeated Maryland in the final, 19–7. This was Princeton's second consecutive national championship under Head Coach Bill Tierney and their fourth title since 1992. This championship was part of the 29 straight games Princeton over three seasons. The championship game was played at Byrd Stadium at the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland, with 25,317 fans in attendance. Byrd Stadium
SECU Stadium is an outdoor athletic stadium on the campus of the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland. It is the home of Maryland Terrapins football and men's lacrosse teams, which compete in the Big Ten Conference. The facility was formerly named Byrd Stadium after Harry "Curley" Byrd, a multi-sport athlete, football coach, and university president in the first half of the 20th century, and temporarily Maryland Stadium after objections to Byrd's naming due to his history of supporting segregation. Georgetown Hoyas Men's Lacrosse
The Georgetown Hoyas men's lacrosse team represents Georgetown University in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I college lacrosse. The coach is currently Kevin Warne, who is in his eighth season at that position. The team plays its home games at Cooper Field. Georgetown previously competed in the old Big East Conference. The new Big East sponsors lacrosse. From 2000–2010, they were a member of the ECAC Lacrosse League and before that, they competed as independents. The NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship tournament determines the annual top men's college lacrosse team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association, NCAA NCAA Division I, Division I. This tournament has determined the national champion since the inaugural 1971 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship. From 1936 through 1970, the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) awarded the Wingate Memorial Trophy annually to the collegiate champion based on regular season records. The 1997 NCAA Division II Lacrosse Championship was the 13th annual tournament to determine the national champions of NCAA Division II men's college lacrosse in the United States. The final, and only match of the tournament, was played at Motamed Field at Adelphi University in Garden City, New York. 1997 NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Tournament
The 1997 NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Championship was the 16th annual single-elimination tournament to determine the national champion of Division I NCAA women's college lacrosse. The championship game was played at Goodman Stadium in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania during May 1997. All NCAA Division I women's lacrosse programs were eligible for this championship. This year, the tournament field expanded from 6 to 8 teams, the first expansion since 1986. Maryland defeated Loyola Maryland, 8–7, to win their fifth and third consecutive, national championship. This would subsequently become the third of Maryland's record seven straight national titles (1995–2001). The leading scorers for the tournament, each with 10 goals, were Amy Fine from North Carolina and Kerri Johnson from Loyola (MD). Casey Powell
Casey Powell (born February 18, 1976) is a Hall of Fame American former college and professional lacrosse player from West Carthage, New York. In 1998, he graduated from Syracuse University, where he was a four-time USILA All-American. Powell was the NCAA Division I Most Outstanding Player in 1997 and 1998. Powell was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2017. Powell played in Major League Lacrosse, the semi-professional field lacrosse league, from its first year in 2001 through 2016, although he played in only 8 games between 2009 and 2013. Yet Powell ranks sixth in goals (243), second in assists (237), and third in points (484) on the MLL career totals list as of 2017. Powell also tops the all-time MLL playoff point chart with 40. Jesse Hubbard (born September 18, 1975) is a former professional lacrosse player who played professional box lacrosse in the National Lacrosse League (NLL) and professional field lacrosse in the Major League Lacrosse (MLL). Virginia Cavaliers Men's Lacrosse
The Virginia Cavaliers men's lacrosse team represents the University of Virginia in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I men's lacrosse. The Loyola Greyhounds men's lacrosse team represents Loyola University Maryland in NCAA Division I lacrosse. Its home matches are played at the Ridley Athletic Complex. Charley Toomey has served as its head coach since 2006. It became a member of the Patriot League along with the university's other intercollegiate athletic programs on July 1, 2013.
