1996–97 Taça De Portugal
The 1996–97 Taça de Portugal was the 57th edition of the Portuguese Association football, football knockout tournament, organized by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF). The 1996–97 Taça de Portugal began in September 1996. The final was played on 10 June 1997 at the Estádio Nacional. S.L. Benfica, Benfica were the previous holders, having defeated Sporting Clube de Portugal, Sporting CP 3–1 in the 1996 Taça de Portugal Final, previous season's final. Boavista F.C., Boavista defeated cup holders Benfica, 3–2 in the final to win their fifth Taça de Portugal. As a result of Boavista winning the domestic cup competition, the ''Axadrezados'' faced 1996–97 Primeira Divisão winners F.C. Porto, Porto in the 1997 Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira. Nuno Miguel Soares Pereira Ribeiro (born 5 July 1976), known as Nuno Gomes, is a Portuguese former professional footballer who played as a striker. Zlatko Zahovič (; born 1 February 1971) is a Slovenian former professional footballer who played as an attacking midfielder. After making a name for himself in Europe in Portugal, most notably with Porto and Benfica where he amassed Primeira Liga totals of 246 matches and 54 goals over one full decade, he went on to have brief stints in Spain and Greece. Mário Jardel de Almeida Ribeiro (; born 18 September 1973) is a Brazilian former professional footballer who played as a forward. He was most noted for his positioning on the field and his heading ability. He was a legend for Grêmio, playing a major part in the squad that won the 1995 Copa Libertadores. With his exceptional positioning ability, he was able to become one of Europe's most prolific strikers during his time at Porto, Galatasaray, and Sporting CP, scoring 206 goals in 274 matches for those clubs. Fernando Manuel Antunes Mendes (born 5 November 1966) is a Portuguese former footballer who played as a left back. Club career Mendes was born in Setúbal. Having been brought up at Sporting CP's youth system at the same time as Paulo Futre, he made his first-team debut in 1984–85 aged 18, and reached the Portugal national team shortly after. In the following seasons he started regularly for the ''Lions'', but they only won one trophy. In 1989, Mendes joined Sporting's rivals S.L. Portimão () is a city and a municipality in the district of Faro, in the Algarve region of southern Portugal. The population in 2011 was 55,614, in an area of 182.06 km2. Estádio Municipal de Portimão is the current stadium of Portimonense S.C. It is located in the centre of Portimão in the Algarve, Portugal and was opened in 1937 for local football club Portimonense S.C. Its capacity is 9,544 people. It hosted Portimonense's stay in the Primeira Liga in the 1980s. In 2006, Portimonense were forced to play away from the Estádio Municipal in the Estádio Algarve, which – built for Euro 2004 – is 70 kilometres from Portimão.
