1996–97 Stoke City F.C. Season
The 1996–97 Football League, 1996–97 season was Stoke City F.C., Stoke City's 90th season in the Football League and 34th in the Football League First Division, second tier. It was also Stoke's final season at their Victoria Ground. After 119 years Stoke were all set to move to a new stadium with the 1996–97 season confirmed as the final season at the Victoria Ground. With Stoke agreeing with the council to pay £6 million towards the cost, manager Lou Macari had no money to spend on new players having to rely on free or cheap transfers and loan signings instead. It was a very inconsistent season results wise as Stoke finished in 12th position with 64 points. The final league match at the Victoria Ground saw a repeat of the first league match against West Bromwich Albion F.C., West Bromwich Albion, Stoke won 2–1 with Graham Kavanagh scoring Stoke's final goal at the Vic. Vince Overson
Vincent David Overson (born 15 May 1962) is an English former professional footballer who played as a central defender. He made nearly 600 appearances in the Football League for Burnley, Birmingham City, Stoke City and Shrewsbury Town over a 20-year career. Career Overson was born in Kettering, Northamptonshire, and followed his brother Richard to Burnley after playing non-league football with Corby Town and Long Buckby. He turned professional in November 1979 and spent seven seasons at Turf Moor making 254 appearances scoring seven goals. During that time Burnley suffered relegation three times whilst they won the Third Division title in 1981–82. He joined Birmingham City in June 1986 and captained Birmingham to success in the 1991 Football League Trophy where they defeated Tranmere Rovers. Andy Griffin
Andrew Griffin (born 17 March 1979) is an English former footballer. Griffin began his career at Stoke City, where he established a reputation as a solid wing-back defender. His impressive performances for the "Potters" led to him being signed by Newcastle United for a fee of £1.5million in January 1998. He spent six years on Tyneside before moving south to Portsmouth in 2004. He was unable to establish himself as first choice right back at "Pompey" and re-joined his old club Stoke on loan for the 2006–07 season. Stoke narrowly missed out on a play-off position and so Griffin decided to sign for newly promoted Derby County, however with Derby struggling to compete in the Premier League he joined Stoke for a third time in January 2008. Britannia (former Building Society)
The Britannia Building Society was founded as the Leek & Moorlands Building Society in Leek in 1856. John Dreyer (footballer)
John Brian Dreyer (born 11 June 1963) is an English former professional footballer and manager who played in defence and midfield. He is currently assistant head coach of Barnet. Playing career Born in Alnwick, Northumberland, Dreyer started his career with Wallingford Town, leaving to join Oxford United in January 1985. He joined Torquay United on loan in December 1985 and made his league debut, for Torquay, on 14 December in a 1–1 draw at home to Cambridge United. He returned to Oxford on 13 January 1986, but moved on loan again on 27 March 1986, joining Fulham until the end of the season. Gerry McMahon
Gerard McMahon (born 29 December 1973) is a Northern Irish football coach and former footballer. As a player, he was a midfielder, who notably played in the Premier League for Tottenham Hotspur and in the Scottish Premiership for St Johnstone. He also played in the Football League for Barnet and Stoke City, having begun and ended his career with Glenavon. He was capped 17 times by Northern Ireland, scoring twice. Since retiring, McMahon managed the Loughgall reserves before a spell as manager of Lurgan Celtic. In 2019 he briefly came out of retirement and played a game for Lurgan amidst an injury crisis. Barnsley () is a market town in South Yorkshire, England. As the main settlement of the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley and the fourth largest settlement in South Yorkshire. Richard Michael Forsyth (born 3 October 1970) is an English former professional footballer who played as a midfielder. He made nearly 250 appearances in the Football League playing for Birmingham City, Stoke City, Blackpool, Peterborough United and Cheltenham Town. Playing career Forsyth was born in Dudley, Staffordshire (now West Midlands). He began his football career with Stourbridge before joining Kidderminster Harriers in 1987. In eight years with the club he played more than 300 games in all competitions, scoring 71 goals. Lee Sandford
Lee Robert Sandford (born 22 April 1968) is an English former footballer who made more than 480 first-team appearances as a defender. He played in the Football League for Portsmouth, Stoke City, Sheffield United, Reading and Stockport County. Career Sandford was born in Lambeth but moved to Basingstoke where he trialed for the local team Basingstoke Town. He was spotted by scouts at Portsmouth and signed on as a professional in December 1985. His coach was Alan Ball and once Ball had replaced Bobby Campbell as manager he promoted Sandford to the first team. He made 90 appearances for Pompey in five seasons before new manager John Gregory made it clear he did not want him in the first team.
