1996–97 Liverpool F.C. Season
The 1996–97 Liverpool F.C. season was the 105th season in the club's existence, and their 35th consecutive year in the top-flight of English football. In addition to the FA Premier League (known as the FA Carling Premiership for sponsorship reasons), the club competed in the FA Cup, League Cup, and the Cup Winners' Cup. Season overview Liverpool led the Premiership for much of the season, and established a five-point lead at the top before New Year's Day 1997. However, the team were overtaken by Manchester United in the latter stages of the season, and it was United who ultimately won the league, though Liverpool squandered several more chances to reclaim the top position. Steve McManaman
Steven McManaman (born 11 February 1972) is an English former footballer who played as a winger for Liverpool, Real Madrid and Manchester City. McManaman is one of the most decorated English footballers to have played for a club abroad and is regarded as one of the best players of his generation, with the UEFA website stating in 2012 that "of all England's footballing exports in the modern era, none was as successful as McManaman". John Scales
John Robert Scales (born 4 July 1966) is an English former professional footballer who played as a central defender from 1984 to 2001. He notably played in the Premier League for Wimbledon, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Ipswich Town as well as playing in the Football League for Bristol Rovers. Robert Marc Jones (born 5 November 1971) is an English football coach and former professional footballer. As a player he was a defender from 1987 to 1999. After starting his career with Crewe Alexandra, he went on to make a name for himself with Liverpool where he won both the FA Cup and League Cup before finishing his career with a brief spell with West Ham United. Mark Wright (born 1 August 1963) is a former England international football player and English football manager. As a player, he had spells with Liverpool, Derby County, Southampton and Oxford United during the 1980s and 1990s. The UEFA Respect Fair Play ranking was used by UEFA from 1995 to the 2015–16 season to grant three berths for the first qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League.
