1996 World Matchplay (darts)
The 1996 Webster's World Matchplay was the third time the World Matchplay darts tournament had been held in the Empress Ballroom at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool between 28 July–3 August 1996. Phil Taylor was the defending champion, but got knocked out by eventual champion Peter Evison by a convincing scoreline of 8–1 in the second round, with Evison averaging over 100. Evison would go onto to record another ton-plus average in the final against Dennis Priestley (who appeared in his third consecutive - and final - World Matchplay final). Winter Gardens, Blackpool
The Winter Gardens is a large entertainment complex in Blackpool, Lancashire, England, which includes a theatre, ballroom and conference facilities. Opened in 1878, it is a Listed building, Grade II* listed building, operated by Blackpool Entertainment Company Limited on behalf of Blackpool Council, which purchased the property from Leisure Parcs Ltd as part of a £40 million deal in 2010. The Winter Gardens has hosted the annual conferences of British political parties and trade unions and its owners claim that every Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Prime Minister since World War II has addressed an audience at the venue. It has also hosted the Blackpool Dance Festival since its inception in 1920, and the World Matchplay (darts), World Matchplay darts tournament since 1994. Mick Manning (darts Player)
Michael Manning (born 4 October 1962) is an English former professional darts player who played in Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) events. Career Manning first made his name in early 1988 when he reached the semi-final of the BDO British Open. Shortly after this he beat World Champion Bob Anderson, Kevin Spiolek and Eric Bristow in a run a to the final of the Dry Blackthorn Cider Masters. In 1994 Manning joined the PDC and beat Rod Harrington on the way to winning the Isle of Man Open the same year. Manning also ventured into Soft Tip and twice won the Soft Tip Bullshooter World Championship in 1998 and 2004. Manning regularly appeared on TV from the mid-nineties until his last TV appearance in 2005 and despite winning numerous matches on TV could never progress beyond the last 16 of any TV tournament. Joe Holmes (darts Player)
Joe Holmes (born June 11, 1963) is an American heavy metal guitarist best known for his stint with Ozzy Osbourne between 1995 and 2001. He has also played with Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth and the L.A. band Lizzy Borden in addition to leading his own bands, Terriff, and currently, Farmikos. Biography Born in New Jersey and raised in Los Angeles, Holmes took lessons from guitarist Randy Rhoads in 1979. Holmes formed Terriff in 1983 but left to join Lizzy Borden in 1987, appearing on the ''Visual Lies'' album. He left Lizzy Borden in 1988 and reformed Terriff, staying with the latter group until 1990. Gary Mawson
Gary Mawson (born May 17, 1963) is a Canadian-born American professional darts player. He currently resides in Fort Myers, Florida, United States. Mawson played darts for the USA in 2004 and the years immediately following, having previously played darts for Canada up to 2001. Mawson used the nickname The Mauler for his matches. Mawson's parents were born in Britain, and he also lived in Bolton, England for 4 years between the ages of 3–7 before moving back to Canada. As a result, Mawson holds dual Canadian and British citizenship. After living in the United States for many years, Mawson is now a US citizen. Phillip "Phil" Gilman (born 25 December 1965) is a former English professional darts player. Darts career Gilman won the 1991 London Classic darts tournament champion beating Stephen Woodfield of Wales in the final. Gilman rose to prominence by winning the prestigious British Open in 1992, beating Craig Clancy, Paul Dillon and Dennis Priestley in the final. Ritchie Gardner
Richard Gardner is an English former professional darts player who had some success during the 1980s, and was one of the 16 top players who formed a breakaway organisation during an acrimonious split in the game during 1992–94. Career Gardner showed some promise during early days of televised darts - although the only title he won was the Belgium Open in 1984, which was a non-televised event. He reached the last 16 of the Winmau World Masters in 1985 and then qualified for the World Professional Darts Championship for the first time in 1986 where he lost in the first round to Terry O'Dea. It was the first year the tournament was staged at the Lakeside Country Club. He failed to progress beyond the second round in his visits to Lakeside, but did come up against some legends of the game including Eric Bristow, Jocky Wilson and Mike Gregory. Jerry Umberger (born 21 January 1942) is a former American professional darts player, who played in Professional Darts Corporation events. He used the nickname Tucker. Career From Pennsylvania, Umberger first competed in the BDO World Darts Championship in 1981, where he lost 2-0 to Cliff Lazarenko in the last 16, a round he would reach again in 1983, this time losing to Tony Brown.
