1996 Texas Rangers Season
The Texas Rangers 1996 season involved the Rangers finishing 1st in the American League west with a record of 90 wins and 72 losses. It would be the first post-season appearance for the Senators/Rangers in franchise history, taking 36 seasons to finally accomplish the feat. This remains the longest amount of time it has ever taken any North American professional sports franchise to make their first playoff appearance. The Rangers would win their first post-season game at Yankee Stadium against the New York Yankees, but would lose the last three games to lose the division series. The one post-season win would be the club's only post-season success until 2010. American League West
The American League West is one of Major League Baseball's six divisions. The division has five teams as of the 2013 season, but had four teams from 1994 to 2012, and had as many as seven teams before the 1994 realignment. Although its teams currently only reside along the West Coast of the United States, west coast and in Texas, historically the division has had teams as far east as Chicago. From 1998 (when the NL West expanded to five teams) to 2012, the AL West was the only MLB division with four teams. The current champion of this division is the Houston Astros. In 2013, the Houston Astros went from the National League Central to the AL West. That move gives all six MLB divisions an equal five teams and both leagues an equal 15 teams each. The American League of Professional Baseball Clubs, known simply as the American League (AL), is one of two leagues that make up Major League Baseball (MLB) in the United States and Canada. It developed from the Western League, a minor league based in the Great Lakes states, which eventually aspired to major league status. It is sometimes called the Junior Circuit because it claimed Major League status for the 1901 season, 25 years after the formation of the National League (the "Senior Circuit"). At the end of every season, the American League champion plays in the World Series against the National League champion; two seasons did not end in playing a World Series (1904, when the National League champion New York Giants refused to play their AL counterpart, and 1994, when a players' strike prevented the Series). The 1996 Chicago White Sox season was the White Sox's 97th season. They finished with a record of 85-77, good enough for 2nd place in the American League Central, 14.5 games behind the 1st place Cleveland Indians. 1996 New York Yankees Season
The 1996 New York Yankees season was the 94th season for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball. The 1996 New York Yankees were managed by Joe Torre, and played at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. The team finished first in the American League Eastern Division with a record of 92–70, 4 games ahead of the Baltimore Orioles and won their first division title since 1981 (the 1994 team had the best record in the American League, but the strike took it away). The team defeated the Texas Rangers in the American League Division Series, three games to one. The Yankees went on to defeat the Orioles in the American League Championship Series four games to one. In the 1996 World Series the Yankees beat the defending National League and World Series champion Atlanta Braves four games to two, winning four consecutive games to overcome a two-games-to-none deficit. Mike Henneman
Michael Alan Henneman (born December 11, 1961) is a former Major League Baseball pitcher with a 10-year career from 1987 to 1996. He played for the Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers, both of the American League, and the Houston Astros of the National League. Henneman was born in St. Charles, Missouri but adopted and raised by a family in Festus, Missouri. He graduated from St. Pius X High School in Festus, and attended Jefferson College in nearby Hillsboro in order to play college basketball but worked his way onto the college baseball team after impressing the school's coach in an American Legion baseball game. In 1983, he played collegiate summer baseball with the Wareham Gatemen of the Cape Cod Baseball League. Ken Hill (baseball)
Kenneth Wade Hill (born December 14, 1965) is a former Major League Baseball pitcher. During a 14-year career, he pitched for seven teams between 1988 and 2001. As a member of the Montreal Expos in 1994, he appeared in the All-Star Game and finished the season tied for the National League lead in wins. He pitched in the 1995 World Series as a member of the Cleveland Indians. Early life Hill graduated from Lynn Classical High School in 1983 and later attended North Adams State College. Career Hill signed a contract with the Detroit Tigers on February 14, 1985. He made his professional debut that year for the Gastonia Jets of the Class A South Atlantic League. Wilson Heredia
Wilson Heredia (born March 30, 1972) is a former Major League Baseball pitcher who played two seasons with the Texas Rangers. He batted and threw right-handed. Career Heredia was signed by the Rangers as an amateur free agent prior to the 1990 season. He made his major league debut early in the season, appearing in six games before being sent back down to the minor leagues. Later that season, he and Scott Podsednik were the "players to be named later" that the Rangers dealt to the Florida Marlins in exchange for Bobby Witt, and he spent the remainder of the 1995 season with the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs. After the 1996 season the Rangers claimed him off waivers from the Marlins. He spent most of the season with the Triple-A Oklahoma City 89ers before being called back up to the major league club that August. Bobby Witt
Robert Andrew Witt Sr. (born May 11, 1964) is a former professional baseball pitcher, who played all or parts of 16 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Texas Rangers, Oakland Athletics, Florida Marlins, St. Louis Cardinals, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Cleveland Indians, and Arizona Diamondbacks. Professional career Witt attended the University of Oklahoma, and in 1983 he played collegiate summer baseball with the Chatham A's of the Cape Cod Baseball League. Florida Marlins
The Miami Marlins are an American professional baseball team based in Miami. The Marlins compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) East division. The club's home ballpark is LoanDepot Park. The franchise began play as an expansion team in the 1993 season as the Florida Marlins. The Marlins originally played home games at Joe Robbie Stadium, which they shared with the National Football League (NFL)'s Miami Dolphins. Scott Podsednik
Scott Eric Podsednik (; born March 18, 1976) is an American former professional baseball outfielder in Major League Baseball (MLB). Best known for his baserunning, Podsednik led the major leagues in stolen bases in with 70, in times caught stealing in with 23, and the American League in times caught stealing in with 19. He won the World Series with the 2005 Chicago White Sox, hitting a walk-off home run in Game 2. Early life Podsednik was born to Duane and Amy Podsednik in West, Texas. Duane worked at a glass plant in Waco and Amy worked at West High School.
