1996 Paris–Roubaix
The 94th running of the Paris–Roubaix single-day cycling classic, was held on 14 April 1996. Classics specialist Johan Museeuw won his first ''Hell of the North'' classic; his team mates Gianluca Bortolami and Andrea Tafi completed the all-Mapei podium. The race started in Compiègne and finished on the velodrome of Roubaix, covering a distance of . The race served as the third leg of the 1996 UCI World Cup. Propelled by tailwind, the race had the fastest average speed (43.31 km/h) since Paris–Roubaix was moved to the more difficult easterly route in 1968. It was the 100th anniversary edition of Paris–Roubaix. Mapei podium dominated the race with three riders on the podium. Four Mapei riders – Italians Franco Ballerini, Gianluca Bortolami, Andrea Tafi and Belgian Johan Museeuw – broke clear at 86 km from the finish. Patrick Lefevere
Patrick Lefevere (born 6 January 1955) is a Belgian former professional cyclist, who currently serves as the general manager of UCI WorldTeam . According to the ranking site ''Cycling Ranking'' he is the most successful cycling manager in history. Career Lefevere is from Flanders, the Dutch-speaking region of the north and was a professional racer from 1976 to 1979, winning Kuurne–Brussels–Kuurne and the fourth stage in the Vuelta a España, both in 1978. When his sports career ended, Lefevere began a new enterprise as a ''directeur sportif'' (team coach). In 1980, he was ''directeur sportif'' at Marc Superia and then spent time at Capri Sonne (1981–1982). From 1985 to 1987, he was with Lotto; in 1988 he joined Tvm and from 1989 until 1991 he was with Weinnman. Marco Milesi (born 30 January 1970) is a former Italian racing cyclist, who rode professionally between 1994 and 2006. Before that, he finished in second place in the Girobio in 1993. Francis Moreau
Francis Moreau (born 21 July 1965) is a French former professional racing cyclist from Saint-Quentin. He turned professional in 1989 and retired 12 years later at the end of 2000. A pursuit specialist, Moreau was a frequent medalist and the UCI Track Cycling World Championships, winning the pursuit in 1991. He was also part of the gold medal winning team at the 1996 Summer Olympics, who set a new Olympic record with a time of 4:05:930. On the road, Moreau finished 132nd at the 1991 Tour de France and 113th in 1994 - despite the death of his father on 9 July; his father had said that he would not want his son to drop out in mourning. Viatcheslav Ekimov
Viatcheslav Vladimirovich Ekimov (Russian Вячеслав Владимирович Екимов; born 4 February 1966), nicknamed ''Eki'', is a Russian former professional racing cyclist. A triple Olympic gold medalist, he was awarded the title of Russian Cyclist of the Century in 2001. Biography Ekimov was born in Vyborg, and started training as a cyclist at age 12 with a bicycle school affiliated with the famous centre of Aleksandr Kuznetsov. He trained in Leningrad at Lokomotiv and later Armed Forces sports society during the Soviet era. Ekimov won three Olympic gold medals: in the track team pursuit in Seoul (1988) for the USSR, and in an upset, in the road time trial in Sydney (2000) for Russia. At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Ekimov won the silver medal for Russia in the men's road individual time trial, losing to American Tyler Hamilton. Brian Holm Sørensen (born 2 October 1962) is a retired Danish professional rider in road bicycle racing from 1986 to 1998, who rode for Team Telekom from 1993 to 1997 and was part of the team that brought his fellow Dane Bjarne Riis to victory in the 1996 Tour de France. Andrei Tchmil (born 22 January 1963) is a retired Soviet (until 1991), Moldovan (1992–1995), Ukrainian (1995–1998) and Belgian (since 1998) professional road bicycle racer. He competed in the men's individual road race at the 1996 Summer Olympics. Cycling career Tchmil was born in Khabarovsk, Russia. His family moved to Ukraine during the days of the Soviet Union. Stefano Zanini (born 23 January 1969 in Varese, Lombardy) is an Italian former professional road racing cyclist, the leadout man for Liquigas-Bianchi in 2006, after riding for Mapei, , and Quick-Step.
