1996 North American Touring Car Championship Season
The 1996 North American Touring Car Championship was the first season of the North American Touring Car Championship. The series was organized by CART, and ran to Super Touring regulations. 16 rounds at 8 race meetings were organized, all but two ( Lime Rock and Trois-Rivières) supporting the CART IndyCar World Series. Teams and drivers Calendar The calendar initially included an event at Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 20, as a support race for NASCAR's The Winston. By December 14, 1995, Charlotte was dropped from the calendar, replaced with a doubleheader at the Molson Indy Vancouver. The Portland event was added to the schedule on April 15. North American Touring Car Championship
The North American Touring Car Championship was a touring car racing series using the Supertouring formula that raced in North America in 1996 and 1997. The series was funded in part by IndyCar team owner Gerald Forsythe with input from British series supremo Alan Gow. He appointed his Vice-President of Business Operations, Canadian Roger Elliott to run the operation headquartered in Tampa, Florida. The Dodge Stratus factory team engineered and crewed by PacWest Racing and Honda Accord factory team operated by TC Kline Racing dominated the series as they were one of the only truly professional outfits to contest the championship. The series ran as a support series to CART road and street course races. While popular with fans, the series struggled to attract teams, with most races in the 1996 season only having 11 or 12 entrants. 1997 saw even fewer entrants with only 9 or 10 cars on track for most of the races. Charlotte Motor Speedway
Charlotte Motor Speedway (previously known as Lowe's Motor Speedway from 1999 to 2009) is a motorsport complex located in Concord, North Carolina, outside Charlotte. The complex features a quad oval track that hosts NASCAR racing including the prestigious Coca-Cola 600 on Memorial Day weekend, and the Bank of America Roval 400. The speedway was built in 1959 by Bruton Smith and is considered the home track for NASCAR with many race teams located in the Charlotte area. The track is owned and operated by Speedway Motorsports with Greg Walter as track president. The complex also features a state-of-the-art drag racing strip, ZMAX Dragway. The Ford Mondeo I (first generation) is a mid-size car that was produced by Ford, beginning on 23 November 1992, with sales beginning on 22 March 1993. It is also known as the Mk I Mondeo; the 1996 facelift versions are usually designated Mk II. Available as a four-door saloon, a five-door hatchback, and a five-door estate, all models for the European market were produced at Ford's plant in the Belgian city of Genk. Pontiac Sunfire
The Pontiac Sunfire is a compact car by Pontiac that was introduced for the 1995 model year to replace the Sunbird. Not only was the name changed, but dramatic styling changes were included as well. The new styling was shared with the redesigned Chevrolet Cavalier. The J platform was updated structurally to meet more stringent safety standards for the 1996 model year. The Pontiac Sunfire went through two facelifts in its 11-year run: a small redesign in 2000 featuring the heavy plastic cladding look that was prevalent with Pontiac at the time, and a more streamlined update in 2003. Peter "P.D." Cunningham (born July 1, 1962) is an American race car driver and owner of RealTime R&L, Inc., based in Saukville, Wisconsin and currently competing in the Pirelli World Challenge GT Championship. His name and his team, RealTime Racing, have become synonymous with the Honda and Acura brands. Through 2013, he has claimed 91 professional race wins across 12 different North American road racing series and holds numerous World Challenge records. Early career Cunningham was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. RealTime Racing is an American professional motorsports team founded in 1987 by Peter Cunningham and headquartered in Saukville, just north of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Nigel Smith (born 17 March 1951) is a British businessman and retired auto racing driver. Racing career His racing career started 1972 as a successful karting driver winning superkart grands prix in the Netherlands, Belgium and New Zealand. He made the switch to car racing in 1984, making appearances in Sports 2000 and Formula Ford. In 1990 and 1991 he was a front running driver in the Honda CRX Challenge. Darren Law
Darren Law (born April 4, 1968) is a Canadian-born American racing driver. At age 14 Law was the International Kart Federation national champion, and shortly thereafter began racing cars in various amateur classes on the west coast of the United States. In 1991 he was a factory driver for Elden Racing Cars' factory team in Formula Renault competition. In 1996 and 1997 he competed in the North American Touring Car Championship for the privateer Hartong Motorsports BMW outfit and finished 8th in points in the series' two years of operation. In 1999 he made a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series start at Heartland Park Topeka, but crashed 34 laps in.
