1996 Intercontinental Final
The 1996 Intercontinental Final was the eighteenth running of the Intercontinental Final and was the second last qualifying stage for Motorcycle speedway riders to qualify for the 1997 Speedway Grand Prix series. The Final was run on 28 July at the Holsted Speedway Center in Holsted, Denmark The Intercontinental Final saw a unique situation where 13 of the riders had come from the Scandinavian Final, five more than originally planned. This came about because of the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme, FIM's controversial post-meeting decision to disqualify all bar three riders (Ryan Sullivan, Kelvin Tatum and Mark Lemon (speedway rider), Mark Lemon) from the 1996 Overseas Final, Overseas Final in Coventry, England, for not starting the meeting on flat tyres. Intercontinental Final
The Intercontinental Final was a Motorcycle speedway Final sanctioned by the FIM as the final qualifying round for the Speedway World Championship between 1975 and 2001. After being introduced in 1975, it replaced the European Final as the final qualifying round for Commonwealth, American and Nordic riders in 1976. The Intercontinental Final was not run from 1991-1994 when it was replaced by the World Semi-finals. It returned to the World Championship calendar in 1995, though unlike from 1975-1991 riders would be vying for a place in the following years Speedway Grand Prix World Championship series and not for the current year World Final. Peter Collins (1976), Ole Olsen (1978) and Bruce Penhall (1981) are the only riders who won the Intercontinental Final to go on and win the World Championship in the same year. Brian Andersen
Brian Andersen (born 13 March 1971) is a Danish former international motorcycle speedway rider. Career Andersen reached the final of the Under-21 World Championship in 1990 and then won the event the following year to become the 1991 Junior World Champion The success brought him to the attention of British leagues and Coventry Bees signed him for the 1992 British League season. He drove up his average over the following seasons for Coventry and established himself as one of their leading riders. In 1995, he won the Individual Speedway Danish Championship. In 1996, he finished second in the 1996 Intercontinental Final, which qualified him for his first Speedway Grand Prix series. He rode in the Grand Prix between 1997 and 2001, and won two bronze medals in the Speedway World Team Cup. He won the Danish Championship for the second time in 1999, which was also his last season for Coventry before he moved to join Oxford Cheetahs for the 2000 Elite League speedway season. In ... Kai Laukkanen
Kai Pekka Laukkanen (born 8 April 1975) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from Finland. Career Laukkanen won the final running of the Intercontinental Final in 2001. He rode in 2004 Speedway Grand Prix and won the bronze medal in 2005 Individual Speedway European Championship. He is an eight times national champion of Finland after winning the Finnish Individual Speedway Championship in 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006. Vesa Ylinen
Vesa Ylinen (born 23 July 1965) is a Finnish former motorcycle speedway rider. Career In 1991, Ylinen became the national champion of Finland after winning the Finnish Individual Speedway Championship and the following year he successfully defended his title by winning it again. He came to the attention of the Edinburgh Monarchs who signed him for the 1993 British League season, where he would stay for two seasons. A third and fourth Finnish national title was secured in 1995 and 1996 respectively and he would return to the Edinburgh club in 1996, when they were called the Scottish Monarchs. He won a fifth and final national title in 1998 and then returned to his native Finland to complete his career with Kotkat Seinajoki. John Jørgensen
John Jørgensen (born 18 July 1962 in Middelfart, Denmark) is a former international motorcycle speedway rider from Denmark. He is not to be confused with Johnny Jørgensen, the 1989 Danish Junior speedway champion. Career Jørgensen won the World Team Cup in 1986 and 1988. He also qualified for the World Final on two occasions and rode in the 1999 and 2000 Speedway Grand Prix. Jørgensen rode in several countries and for various teams but was best known for his successful spell with the Coventry Bees. Jan Stæchmann
Jan Stæchmann (born 5 June 1966 in Kolding, Denmark) is a former professional motorcycle speedway rider and manager of the Denmark national speedway team, Danish national team. Career In 1991, he won the British League Division Two Riders Championship, held on 14 September at Brandon Stadium. He led Denmark to the 2006 Speedway World Cup and 2008 Speedway World Cup, as well as the 2010 U21 Team World Championship. Joined commercial rights holders BSI Speedway (IMG) on their media production team as broadcast co-commentator for 2011 and 2012. He had a short stint as team manager for Swindon Robins at end of 2011, and Peterborough Panthers 2012 until mid 2013. Rune Holta
Rune Holta (born 29 August 1973 in Stavanger, Norway) is a speedway rider. He grew up in Randaberg Norway, but has been a Polish citizen since 2002, allowing him to represent Poland in international competitions and was a member of their Speedway World Cup winning teams in 2005, 2007 & 2010. He has also won the Polish Championship in 2003 and 2007. In 2020, he rode for Dackarna Malilla in the Swedish Elit League and for Włókniarz Częstochowa in the Polish Ekstraliga. In 2022, he helped PSŻ Poznań win the 2022 2.Liga. Awards For his sport achievements, he received: Golden Cross of Merit in 2007. Brian Karger
Brian Karger (born 9 February 1967, in Horsens, Denmark) is a former international motorcycle speedway rider. He was a member of the Denmark speedway team when they won the 1991 and 1995 World Team Cup Finals. He also qualified for the 1992 World Final in Wrocław, Poland where he finished 16th (last) with 4pts scored, including a win in his final race. He rode in the United Kingdom for the Swindon Robins, Arena Essex Hammers and also for the Belle Vue Aces. He rode in Sweden and won the Swedish Elitserien in 1988 with Bysarna. After retiring he became a notable engine tuner. Karl Mikael Karlsson (born 21 August 1973), who rides under the name Mikael Max, is an international motorcycle speedway rider who rode in the UK for the Wolverhampton Wolves in the Elite League.
