Club Deportivo Olimpia
Club Deportivo Olimpia is a professional Honduran football club based in Tegucigalpa, Francisco Morazán. The club is the nation's most successful team both in the domestic league and in international club competitions. History Olimpia was founded as a baseball club on June 12, 1912, by Héctor Pineda Ugarte, Carlos Bram, Arturo Bram, Enrique Buik, Santiago Buik, Miguel Sanchez, Samuel Inestrosa Gómez, and Ramón Field. In 1917, it also became a football team. C.D. Olimpia is the most successful football team in Honduras, having won 31 domestic league titles since it was founded in 1912, the latest being the 2019–20 Apertura & Clausura season. It has also represented the Honduran football association in international club competitions more than any other team by far. They are the only Honduran club that has won the CONCACAF Champions Cup twice, first in 1972 and again in 1988. 1997–98 Honduran Liga Nacional
In 1997–98 the Honduran Liga Nacional brought a new competition system; the league would be now divided into two tournaments (Apertura and Clausura), having C.D. Motagua won their 6th and 7th title in this new format. The tournament lasted from August 1997 to October 1998 and it consisted of 11 teams for the first time since the 1981–82 season. Honduran Cup
The Honduran Cup was the top knock-out Association football, football tournament in Honduras. The first tournament was played in 1968 Honduran Cup, 1968, four years later the second tournament took the name ''Copa Presidente'' ( en, President's Cup) in honor of Dr. Ramón Ernesto Cruz Uclés, Ramón Cruz; later, General Oswaldo López Arellano, Oswaldo López changed the name and called it ''Copa Jefe de Estado'' ( en, Head of State Cup). Twenty years later the third tournament was played. From 1992 to 1994, the Cup tournament was played as a separate tournament from the league (played from June to August). From 1995 to 1999, the winner of the first stage of the league tournament was declared Cup champions. In 2015, the tournament was yet again re-launched and re-branded as ''Copa Presidente''. The 1996–97 Honduran Liga Nacional season was the 31st edition of the Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional de Honduras, Honduran Liga Nacional. The format of the tournament remained the same as the 1995–96 Honduran Liga Nacional, previous season. Club Deportivo Olimpia won the title after defeating Platense F.C., C.D. Platense in the finals. Both teams qualified to the 1998 CONCACAF Champions' Cup. Liga Betcris de Honduras (''Honduran National Professional Football League'') is the highest division of football in Honduras. The league season is divided into Opening (autumn) and Closing (spring). One team is relegated to the Liga de Ascenso (the team with fewest points in Opening and Closing) and one team is promoted from Liga de Ascenso. The top four clubs participate in play-offs to decide the champion. The winners of the Opening and Closing competitions participate in the CONCACAF Champions League. Independiente Villela
Independiente de San Pedro Sula was a football club located in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. The club played several seasons in the Honduran Liga Nacional as well in the Honduran Amateur League. History Independiente Villela obtained the Cortés regional championship in 1958 and had the right to play for the 1958–59 Honduran Amateur League which they eventually lost to Club Deportivo Olimpia. In 1980 they won the Honduran Segunda División, therefore gaining a spot at the 1981–82 Honduran Liga Nacional. They spent two years in first division until they were relegated in 1982–83. It was in the year 1992-1993 that the club was bought in the second division by businessman Miguel Villela owner of the Villela group and the team changed its nickname to chorizeros for the reason that it is a sausage company and added Villela to the club's name. Pumas de la UNAH or simply Universidad was a Honduran football club. History They were formed to represent the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Honduras. They merged with Broncos, forming ''Broncos de la UNAH'', twice in 1982–83 and 2006–07 and meanwhile played in Choluteca those two seasons. They had initially taken over the '' Club Deportivo Atlético Español'' franchise. During their stay at first division as ''Pumas'', they played in Comayagua.
