The 1996 Copa del Rey was the 60th edition of the Spanish basketball Cup. It was organized by the ACB and was played in Murcia in the Palacio de Deportes between February 22 and 25, 1996. TDK Manresa won its first title after defeating FC Barcelona in the overtime of the final game. The Copa del Rey de Baloncesto (English: '' King's Cup of Basketball'') is an annual cup competition for Spanish basketball teams organized by Spain's top professional league, the Liga ACB. History Originally known as the ''Copa de España de Baloncesto'', was first played in 1933 and contested in its first editions only by teams from the provinces of Madrid and Barcelona. It was the first nationwide basketball competition played in Spain. During the Francoism, it was referred to as the ''Copa del Generalísimo de Baloncesto'', before becoming the ''Copa del Rey de Baloncesto'' in 1977. Club Baloncesto León was a basketball team, based in León, Spain. History Early years (1981-1988) Baloncesto León was founded by José Antonio Moirón García, Enrique Emperador Marcos, Juan Carlos Rodríguez Villanueva, Lisardo Mourelo González and Alberto Sobrín Martínez in León on 20 May 1981. It began to play in ''Tercera División'', the fourth division of Spanish basketball. In 1981, the team was promoted to ''Segunda División''. Harper Terry Williams (born May 25, 1971) is a retired American basketball player and a former administrative assistant on the Auburn Tigers coaching staff. He played professionally for 17 years, including ten in Spain's Liga ACB. Performance Index Rating (PIR) is a basketball mathematical statistical formula that is used by the Euroleague Basketball Company's first and second tier competitions, the EuroLeague and the EuroCup, as well as various European national domestic and regional leagues. It is a part of the Tendex basketball rating system. It is also variously referred to as Performance Index Ranking, Rating, Ranking, Evaluation, Valuation, and Efficiency. It is similar to, but not exactly the same as, the NBA's Efficiency (EFF) stat. José Antonio Montero
José Antonio Montero Botanch (born January 3, 1965 in Barcelona, Spain) is a retired Spanish professional basketball player. Professional career Montero was selected 113th overall, by the Atlanta Hawks, at the 1987 NBA draft. He was the second Spanish player to be drafted by an NBA franchise, after Fernando Martín. However, he never played in the NBA. As a member of FC Barcelona, he competed in two EuroLeague Finals, in 1991, and 1996. He was a FIBA European Selection in 1990. Joan "Chichi" Creus Molist (born November 24, 1956) is a Spanish former basketball player who played as point guard. Professional career Creus spent his entire 25-year career in Catalonia. He mainly played in Granollers EB, with a two-year period with FC Barcelona, where he won one National League and two National Cups. In 1993, after the dissolution of Granollers, Creus signed with TDK Manresa. He led the club to win the two only championships in its history: the 1996 Copa del Rey and the Liga ACB in the 1997–98, considered one of the biggest miracles in the history of Spanish basketball. Creus was named MVP of both competitions. In 1999, Creus announced his retirement. The Asociación de Clubes Españoles de Baloncesto (Spanish Basketball Clubs Association), more commonly known as the Asociación de Clubs de Baloncesto (ACB), is a national sports association responsible for administering the main professional basketball league in Spain - the Liga Endesa. The organisation was founded in 1982. Competition The 18 member clubs of the ACB are grouped into the Liga Endesa. In any given season a club plays each of the others in the same division twice, once at their home stadium and once at that of their opponents.
