1995–96 Bolton Wanderers F.C. Season
The 1995–1996 season was the 117th season in Bolton Wanderers F.C.'s existence, and their first ever season in the Premier League following promotion from the Football League First Division. This article covers the period from 1 July 1995 to 30 June 1996. Season summary Bolton Wanderers returned to the top flight after a 15-year exile, only eight years after playing in the old Fourth Division, but with a new manager in Roy McFarland following Bruce Rioch's move to Arsenal. Bolton made a terrible start to the campaign and McFarland made several moves in the transfer market, but this was not enough to turn things around and he was sacked on New Year's Day with Bolton bottom of the table and just two wins to their name. His assistant Colin Todd took over, and Bolton's form improved, but they could not stave off relegation. Bolton Wanderers F
Bolton (, locally ) is a large town in Greater Manchester in North West England, formerly a part of Lancashire. A former mill town, Bolton has been a production centre for textiles since Flemish people, Flemish weavers settled in the area in the 14th century, introducing a wool and cotton-weaving tradition. The urbanisation and development of the town largely coincided with the introduction of textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution. Bolton was a 19th-century boomtown and, at its zenith in 1929, its 216 cotton mills and 26 bleaching and dyeing works made it one of the largest and most productive centres of Spinning (textiles), cotton spinning in the world. Keith Branagan
Keith Graham Branagan (born 10 July 1966) is a football coach and former professional player. As a player, he was a goalkeeper who notably played in the Premier League for Bolton Wanderers and Ipswich Town. He also played in the Football League for Cambridge United, Millwall, Brentford and Gillingham. Born in England, he won a single cap for the Republic of Ireland at international level in 1997. Club career Branagan played for a number of clubs in his career. He began his career at Cambridge United, and later joined Millwall. However, his most successful years were spent at Bolton Wanderers, where he experienced three promotions, played two seasons in the Premier League and played at Wembley in the 1995 League Cup final. Scott Sellars
Scott Sellars (born 27 November 1965) is an ex English football coach and former professional footballer who is ex Technical Director at Wolverhampton Wanderers. As a player, he was a winger who made more than 500 appearances, notably playing in the Premier League with Leeds United, Newcastle United and Bolton Wanderers. He also played football with Blackburn Rovers, in Denmark with AGF Aarhus and in the Football League with Huddersfield Town and Mansfield Town. He was capped three times at England at under-21 level. Alan Thompson (footballer Born 1973)
Alan Thompson (born 22 December 1973) is an English football coach and former professional footballer. As a player he was a midfielder who notably played in the Premier League for Bolton Wanderers and Aston Villa and in the Scottish Premiership with Celtic. He also played in the Football League with Newcastle United, Leeds United and Hartlepool United He made 550 appearances during his career and was capped by England once against Sweden in 2004. Following retirement, Thompson has worked as a coach for Newcastle United, Celtic, Birmingham City and Blackpool. Mixu Paatelainen
Mika-Matti Petteri Paatelainen (born 3 February 1967) is a Finnish former professional football player and the head coach of Veikkausliiga club HIFK. He scored 18 goals in 70 appearances for the Finnish national team, which makes him Finland's all time thirteenth most capped player and fifth top goalscorer. He is the eldest of three brothers, all of whom have played professional football. Their father Matti was also a Finnish international. Paatelainen had a 20-year playing career, playing for nine clubs in four countries. David Lee (footballer Born 1967)
David Mark Lee (born 5 November 1967 in Whitefield, Lancashire) is an English former professional footballer. Playing career Lee, a right winger, began his career with Bury in 1986. In five years at Gigg Lane, he made just over 200 league appearances and scored 35 goals. Southampton came in for his services in 1991 with a successful £350,000 bid. Lee's stay on the south coast was short-lived, however; after only twenty appearances he returned to the north-west with Bolton Wanderers in a one-month loan deal. In December 1992, Bolton made the move permanent in a £275,000 deal. Lee remained at Burnden Park for five years, clocking up 147 appearances and scoring sixteen goals. Alan Stubbs (born 6 October 1971) is an English football manager and former professional footballer As a player he was a centre-back who played top flight football for every club he played for. He played in the Premier League with Bolton Wanderers, Everton, Sunderland and Derby County as well as a five-year spell in the Scottish Premiership with Celtic. He was capped once at England B level. Following retirement in 2008 through a knee injury, Stubbs then worked as a coach for Everton, and started his management career with Hibernian in 2014. Guðni Bergsson
Guðni Bergsson (born 21 July 1965) is an Icelandic former professional footballer and former president of the Icelandic Football Association from 2017 to 2021. As a player, he was a defender who notably played in the Premier League for Tottenham Hotspur and Bolton Wanderers. He also played for Valur and 1860 Munich. Jimmy Phillips (footballer Born 1966)
James Neil Phillips (born 8 February 1966) is an English football coach and former professional footballer. As a player, he was a defender who notably played in the Premier League for Middlesbrough and Bolton Wanderers. He also played in the Scottish Premiership for Rangers and in the Football League with Oxford United. Whilst at Bolton he played in the 1995 Football League Cup Final. Scott Green (footballer)
Scott Paul Green (born 15 January 1970) is an English football manager and former professional footballer who is the manager of Finnish club Pallo-Iirot. As a player, he was a defender who notably played in the Premier League for Bolton Wanderers. He also played in the Football League with Wigan Athletic and Wrexham as well as non-league sides Telford United and Ashton United. Following retirement, Green managed Ashton United before having spells as a youth coach at both Yeovil Town and Portsmouth.
