1995 World Matchplay (darts)
The 1995 Webster's World Matchplay was the second annual World Matchplay darts tournament organised by the World Darts Council (WDC, which became the Professional Darts Corporation in 1997). The Winter Gardens, Blackpool played host to the event for the second year running, and it took place between 31 July–5 August 1995. Seven former world champions were in the field. Defending champion Larry Butler beat one of them, Eric Bristow, in the first round. Butler's title defence ended with a quarter-final defeat to Dennis Priestley, the man he beat to win the title the previous year. Jocky Wilson made what turned out to be his last appearance in a televised tournament at this event. The two-time former World Champion beat Rod Harrington in the first round, but then lost to Nigel Justice in the second round. Winter Gardens, Blackpool
The Winter Gardens is a large entertainment complex in Blackpool, Lancashire, England, which includes a theatre, ballroom and conference facilities. Opened in 1878, it is a Listed building, Grade II* listed building, operated by Blackpool Entertainment Company Limited on behalf of Blackpool Council, which purchased the property from Leisure Parcs Ltd as part of a £40 million deal in 2010. The Winter Gardens has hosted the annual conferences of British political parties and trade unions and its owners claim that every Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Prime Minister since World War II has addressed an audience at the venue. It has also hosted the Blackpool Dance Festival since its inception in 1920, and the World Matchplay (darts), World Matchplay darts tournament since 1994. Alan Warriner-Little
Alan Warriner-Little (born Warriner; 24 March 1962) is an English former professional darts player. Nicknamed The Iceman, he is a former World Grand Prix champion and a former runner-up at the World Professional Darts Championship. Darts career Before coming to prominence as a darts professional, Warriner-Little appeared as a contestant in a 1987 edition of the ITV gameshow Bullseye whilst working as a State Enrolled Nurse on Ward 13 Upper at Lancaster Moor Hospital. He scored 257 the following year when he was invited back to throw for charity. He made his World Championship debut in 1989, losing a second-round match to Jocky Wilson in a sudden death leg, after missing 8 match darts, with Wilson going on to win the tournament for his second World Championship. Gerald Verrier
Gerald Verrier (born December 5, 1958) is an American former professional darts player who played in events of the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). Career Verrier was brought in to make up the numbers in the inaugural 1994 WDC World Darts Championship, but competed in the first seven tournaments, although he never got past the first phase on any occasion. He had better luck in the World Matchplay, where he reached the last 16 in both the 1994 and 1998 tournaments. Jerry Umberger
Jerry Umberger (born 21 January 1942) is a former American professional darts player, who played in Professional Darts Corporation events. He used the nickname Tucker. Career From Pennsylvania, Umberger first competed in the BDO World Darts Championship in 1981, where he lost 2-0 to Cliff Lazarenko in the last 16, a round he would reach again in 1983, this time losing to Tony Brown. Umberger runner up on 1981 Los Angeles Open but he lost to John Corfe of Wales. Jamie Harvey
Jamie Harvey (born 15 August 1955) is a Scottish former professional darts player who played in Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) and British Darts Organisation (BDO) tournaments. He used the nickname Bravedart for his matches – a play on the lead character from the film ''Braveheart''. As darts began to introduce entrance tunes for its players during the 1990s, Harvey used to come to stage whilst the tune "The Bonnie Banks o' Loch Lomond" was played. Career Having made his World Championship debut in 1992, Harvey was one of the players who started the Professional Darts Corporation (then known as the World Darts Council, WDC) in 1993 and played at every PDC World Championship between 1994 and 2006. Gary Mawson
Gary Mawson (born May 17, 1963) is a Canadian-born American professional darts player. He currently resides in Fort Myers, Florida, United States. Mawson played darts for the USA in 2004 and the years immediately following, having previously played darts for Canada up to 2001. Mawson used the nickname The Mauler for his matches. Mawson's parents were born in Britain, and he also lived in Bolton, England for 4 years between the ages of 3–7 before moving back to Canada. As a result, Mawson holds dual Canadian and British citizenship. After living in the United States for many years, Mawson is now a US citizen. Ritchie Gardner
Richard Gardner is an English former professional darts player who had some success during the 1980s, and was one of the 16 top players who formed a breakaway organisation during an acrimonious split in the game during 1992–94. Career Gardner showed some promise during early days of televised darts - although the only title he won was the Belgium Open in 1984, which was a non-televised event. He reached the last 16 of the Winmau World Masters in 1985 and then qualified for the World Professional Darts Championship for the first time in 1986 where he lost in the first round to Terry O'Dea. It was the first year the tournament was staged at the Lakeside Country Club. Steve Brown (darts Player, Born 1962)
Steve Brown (born July 15, 1962 from Carshalton, Surrey) is a former English-born American professional darts player. Who had the majority of his success during the 1990s when he finished third at the inaugural Professional Darts Corporation's version of the World Championship in 1994 - after the majority of top players decided to separate from the British Darts Organisation. Career During that successful run in the 1994 PDC World Darts Championship Brown beat Kevin Spiolek, Keith Deller and Alan Warriner to reach the last four before losing heavily 0-5 to Phil Taylor. Mick Manning (darts Player)
Michael Manning (born 4 October 1962) is an English former professional darts player who played in Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) events. Career Manning first made his name in early 1988 when he reached the semi-final of the BDO British Open. Shortly after this he beat World Champion Bob Anderson, Kevin Spiolek and Eric Bristow in a run a to the final of the Dry Blackthorn Cider Masters. In 1994 Manning joined the PDC and beat Rod Harrington on the way to winning the Isle of Man Open the same year. Manning also ventured into Soft Tip and twice won the Soft Tip Bullshooter World Championship in 1998 and 2004. Graeme Stoddart
Graeme Stoddart (born 30 July 1959 in Newcastle upon Tyne) is a former English–Dutch professional darts player who played in Professional Darts Corporation events. His nickname was Shark. Career Stoddart represented Holland in the 1984 European Cup. He came to prominence after being invited from the WDC rankings for the inaugural WDC World Darts Championship in 1994. He was drawn in Group 8, where he defeated Jocky Wilson, before being knocked out in the final group match by the eventual champion, Dennis Priestley. He entered many majors in the early years of the WDC/PDC, eventually reaching the quarter-finals of the 1998 World Grand Prix, beating Paul Lim, and where he lost to Rod Harrington. Cliff Lazarenko (born 16 March 1952) is an English former professional darts player.
