1995 Finnish Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Finland on 19 March 1995. Nohlen, D & Stöver, P (2010) ''Elections in Europe: A data handbook'', p606 The Social Democratic Party (SDP) achieved the best result of any party since World War II, winning 63 of the 200 seats in the Eduskunta and defeating the incumbent centre-right coalition led by the Centre Party. The result was attributed to the government's unpopular austerity policies as well as lingering effects of the early 1990s recession. After the election, a five party "Rainbow Coalition" was formed, between the SDP, National Coalition Party, Left Alliance, Swedish People's Party and the Green League, with SDP leader Paavo Lipponen appointed Prime Minister. Independence Party (Finland)
Independence Party (, IPU; ) is a minor Eurosceptic political party in Finland. It was founded in 1994 as Alliance for Free Finland. The party supports membership in the European Economic Area as an alternative to Finland's membership in the European Union and the Eurozone. The party also opposes NATO. Its current chairman is Henri Aitakari. Party organization Based in Helsinki, IPU is a registered party. The party has two out of 31 city counselors in Laitila, elected at the 2017 Finnish municipal elections. IPU is a minor political party; it has never had any MPs in the Finnish Parliament. Finnish Rural Party
The Finnish Rural Party ( fi, Suomen maaseudun puolue, SMP; sv, Finlands landsbygdsparti, FLP) was an agrarian and populist political party in Finland. Starting as a breakaway faction of the Agrarian League in 1959 as the Small Peasants' Party of Finland (Suomen Pientalonpoikien Puolue), the party was identified with the person of Veikko Vennamo, a former Agrarian League Member of Parliament known for his opposition to the politics of President Urho Kekkonen. Vennamo was chairman of the Finnish Rural Party between 1959 and 1979.
