IAAF World Cup In Athletics
The IAAF Continental Cup was an international track and field competition organized by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). The event was proposed by IAAF former President Primo Nebiolo and was first held in 1977 as the IAAF World Cup. The event was initially held every two years, but following the establishment of the World Athletics Championships it moved to a quadrennial basis. The 1989 edition was held the same year as the World Indoor Championships, then moved to the even-year between Summer Olympics, ensuring the sport of athletics had a global competition in all years. The original format included separate men's and women's competitions consisting of 21 events each, with team points being awarded for the finishing position of each athlete. Eight teams, five continental and three national, entered an athlete in each event: if the stadium had a ninth lane, the host nation would also be permitted to enter. Craig Winrow
Craig Nicholas Winrow (born 22 December 1971 in Ormskirk) is a male retired English middle-distance runner competing primarily in the 800 metres. Early life Winrow was educated at Burscough Priory High School in Burscough, Lancashire. As a 14 year old student in 1986, he "shattered" the Lancashire Schools' County Athletics Championships in the event, finishing with a time of 2 minutes and 1.3 seconds, beating the previous best by 3 seconds. At the age of 15, he was running in 49 seconds and in 1 minute 51.8 seconds, which was almost level with the UK age-best for his age group. By the age of 16, he was being sponsored by local computer firm Southport Hi-Tech, where he planned to join on a youth training scheme after leaving school. As a young athlete, he looked up to Steve Ovett and was aiming to compete in the 1992 Summer Olympics. Samuel Matete
Samuel Matete (born 27 July 1968 in Chingola) is a retired male track and field athlete from Zambia, who competed mainly in 400 metres hurdles. Career Noted for his exceptionally fast finish, he was one of the world's leading hurdlers in the early to mid-1990s, and became the first Zambian track and field world champion in 1991. This was the first time that an African athlete had won that event. He represented Zambia in the 400 m hurdles on four occasions (1988 to 2000) and was the silver medallist at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Allen Johnson
Allen Kenneth Johnson (born March 1, 1971) is an American former hurdling athlete who won the gold medal in the 110 metre hurdles at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. He is also a four-time world champion. Born in Washington, D.C., an all-round athlete, Johnson attended University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and excelled at high jump, long jump and decathlon as well as hurdles. He was the 1992 NCAA Indoor Champion for 55 meter hurdles but did not win the outdoor championship. Anthony Alexander Jarrett (born 13 August 1968 in Enfield, London) is a male former sprint and hurdling athlete from England. Athletics career He was a silver medalist in the 110 metres hurdles at the World Championships in 1993 and 1995, and at the European Championships in 1990, and won the gold medal in the event at the Commonwealth Games in 1990 and 1998. Jarrett came fourth in the 110m hurdles at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, missing out on a bronze medal by 1000th of a second to Jack Pierce of the United States. He again narrowly missed out on an Olympic medal when he was a member of the 4 × 100 m sprint relay team that also finished 4th in the Olympic final of that year. Robert Neil "Rob" Denmark (born 23 November 1968) is a British former middle- and long-distance runner who won a gold medal in the 5000 metres at the 1994 Commonwealth Games, a silver medal in the 5000 metres at the 1994 European Championships, and a bronze medal in the 3000 metres at the 1991 IAAF World Indoor Championships. Antonio Fabián Silio Alaguire (born 9 May 1966) is a retired long-distance runner from Argentina. He competed in three editions of the World Championships in Athletics (1991 to 1995), racing in the 10,000 metres. His best result was 8th in 1993. He also finished in the top six of three World Half Marathon Championships (1992, 1993, 1998), finishing second in the inaugural World Half Marathon Championships in 1992. Khalid Skah
Khalid Skah ( ar, خالد سكاح) (born 29 January 1967) is a Moroccan track and field athlete, winner of the 10,000 metres at the 1992 Summer Olympics. Born in Midelt, Morocco, Skah established himself first as a good cross country runner by winning the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in 1990 and 1991. Racing career 1991 World Championships His first major tournament on track was 1991 World Championships where he at first won a bronze in 10,000 m and then finished sixth at the 5000 m run. This was a disappointing outcome for Skah as, earlier in the season, he had won the 10000 m race in Oslo against a very strong field and had emerged as one of the favourites for the finals in Tokyo. However, for the 10 000 m final Richard Chelimo and the eventual world champion, Moses Tanui (both of Kenya), employed some very elaborate tactics and worked as a team. Martin Bremer
Martin Bremer (born 19 March 1970) is a German former long-distance runner who competed in distances from 5000 metres to the marathon. He competed in the 1990s and represented Germany twice internationally, running at the 1992 IAAF World Cross Country Championships and taking a 5000 m bronze at the 1994 IAAF World Cup. Born in Dortmund, he was a member of LG Bayer Leverkusen until the end of 1994, at which point he was banned from the sport for two years after a positive doping test for excess testosterone. In his professional career he ran in several road running competitions. His greatest achievement on the roads was a win at the Frankfurt Marathon, which he did in 1996 in a time of 2:13:38 hours. |

John Barry Nuttall (born 11 January 1967) is a male British former long-distance runner who competed in track and cross country running. He competed for Great Britain at the 1996 Summer Olympics. He also represented his country twice at the World Championships in Athletics (1993, 1995) and five times at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships. Brahim Lahlafi
Brahim Lahlafi ( ar, إبراهيم لحلافي) (born 15 April 1968, in Fes) is a retired long-distance runner who represented Morocco during his active career. He acquired French citizenship on 6 April 2002, but represented Morocco again from 15 March 2007. His greatest achievement was the Olympic bronze medal in 2000. This was his first medal at a major international event, having barely missed the podium at the 1995 World Cross Country Championships (5th place) and twice in 5000 metres at the World Championships; 1995 (5th) and 1999 (fourth). He did win a bronze medal in 3000 metres at the 1998 African Championships. In 1996 he was the winner of the inaugural Belgrade Race Through History competition.
